Top seat belt fixings FHC

I am in the process of fitting some original three point static seat belts to my FHC.

I do not have all of the original fittings for these belts and wondered if anyone had a close up picture or advice on the original parts that were used for the top mounting under the quarter light.

The chrome escutcheon BD24411 has a recess in it for the screw BD24484, which is used when seatbelts are not fitted.

Is there some sort of top hat washer that sits in this hole to bring the surface flush?

I have the usual stepped washers that go through the seatbelt brackets with the wavy spring washer on them, so that the bracket can move, but I would be putting the escutcheon and the trim behind it under a great deal of pressure if I simply bolted this up.

I can easily make something up, but wondered what was done originally.

From your photo I assume that the rear spacer does not fit inside the recess in the escutcheon?

I am using the same top hat spacer as you, which looks to be the same diameter as the other spacer.

I have measured the diameter of the spacer I have and its 18.89mm; the width of the recess in the escutcheon is 16.37mm.

There is a large gap between the top of the seat belt fixing on the shell and the top of the escutcheon (10.90mm).

Is this gap smaller on yours and are you able to tighten the bolt without crushing the trim?

Hi Paul,

Yes, it does seem strange that the escutcheon is counterbored and that the spacers are too large to fit into the c’bore.

My spacer diameter is 19.2mm and the c’bore is 16.6mm. The depth to the head of the mounting boss is also similar to yours. But what the boss will tighten Up against is the inside mounting face of the escutcheon. If I place the escutcheon up against the trim (shown in photo) there is a gap of about 3mm.

On my 3.8, the escutcheon bolted up tight to the bodywork with the recess in the escutcheon helping to avoid too much distortion of the trim.
The escutcheons and bolts were original items, which I rechromed. Are yours original or aftermarket?

I’m going to replace my original 2 point belts with 3 point versions so it will be interesting to see what fixings come with them.

Hi Paul, I don't have seatbelts in my ser 1 but when I did consider them I was supplied with these parts which I was told were the parts required, Hope this helps. See pic.

I really cannot recall where I got them. I've had the car 47 years so it was a long time ago.

Derek, that is exactly the part I thought was missing

Richard, your original escutcheons are slightly different from the reproductions that Nick and I have.

The lower part fits under the chrome trim for a better fitting effect. mine has a taller bottom part, which sits on the chrome, so fits less well.

I thought that I would make up a spacer to try today which works quite well:





Mine works, but you can see the top face; I think I am going to make up some others like yours Derek

Hi Derek,

Is it possible that you could measure the end of the spacer that is furthest away in your picture?

From the raised portion outwards.

I assume that this would be the part that the seat belt bracket sits on and appears to be a lot longer that the equivalent part on the standard type spacers as in Nicks first picture?

Hi Paul, the longer side is 7mm,the central flange is 2.5 mm and the short side is 4mm. Not sure which way round they fit as I've never tried them but would think the long side would go into the chrome surround and the short side would be for the seatbelt plate. If you are going to make them I would make your own measurement of the depth of the recess in the surround.

Hi Derek,

The widest diameter part will be to the safety belt bracket side, the smaller one sits in the escutcheon as far as I can tell. Does this affect our conclusion as to which way yours would be fitted?







Mine measures 7mm, centre 4.40mm and 3.5mm at the short end. I suppose it is possible that the original escutcheons might require slightly different measurements??

Hi Paul. looks like you've cracked it. I've just removed one of my escutcheons to check and yes the short side sits in it with the long side to seatbelt. I'm now reconsidering fitting belts. I put it off because the car has never had them and by todays standards the car is pretty unsafe anyway, so I have always driven it defensively.
With some other drivers out there today I have to change my ways perhaps.

Unfortunately I cannot answer your question with any degree of certainty as this part of the forum is for Series One cars, which are slightly different in this area.

I would suggest that you post your message in the Series 3 headed section, where you are more likely to get some advice on your particular model.
