#1 Door card chromes

Post by ollieoscarsid » Tue Jun 16, 2020 7:48 am

Can anyone advise what’s used to hold the upper door card chrome strips on a 63 car please. The one that goes between the door card and the upper crash pad. The lower one uses the little staple clips, but unsure with the upper, they were missing on my car. Thanks in advance. Chris.

I think they were held on with small self tapping screws.

Mine were riveted - one at each end. Don’t know what was ‘original’ at the factory though. Self tappers would do just as well.

Mine weren’t original ether.

My parts manual for the 4.2 states they are DAJ504/8C self tapers, which I believe is a black finished flat head slotted #4 1/2". Not sure if this would be the same for the 3.8.

I found a countersunk screw better as it didn’t interfere with the door card as much.

Thanks for all the replies, I’m thinking mine is different, the trim is the same section as the lower one, just shorter. There must be some sort of clip that is screwed on first then the trim clips to it, any screws fitted from the outside would be visible.

You may need to check in the factory fit section to confirm the correct type for your model year. Yours look like the earlier 3.8, mine being the later 3.8/4.2 version.
On my Nov 63 fhc, this is what I had originally (don’t know if correct for year/month, but no reason to believe they had been replaced at any point). The wide chrome trim riveted to the door, into which the top edge of the door panel slotted. Then a slimmer chrome edging slid over the forward top edge of the panel.

The CMC restoration manual shows the cap and the door card fitted with special clips for the chromes screwed on with 4 x 3/4 pan head self tapers in the joint between the two. That’s on the earlier car they were restoring.

It goes on to say that "it is normally accepted that the upper chrome is held on using the same clip as the lower longer chrome and that the upper chrome sits just below the joint".

Not sure if they need to be modified for this?

Thank you, as far as I can tell everything I have is original, it all fits nicely 😱, and there are no spare holes, mines a March 63 car so a tad earlier than yours Richard. So I’ll go with what I have. Thanks for the link to the clips, I shall add to my next order.
