E SI with XJ6 SIII oil filter housing-filter bypass?
#1 E SI with XJ6 SIII oil filter housing-filter bypass?
I have a S1 E with a XJ6SIII oil filter housing with cooler fittings.
Working out best filter to use and trying to determine if the filter head has it’s own “clogged filter bypass” or does it depend on the filter canister bypass valve?
Not talking about the pressure bypass that dumps back into the pan.
This bypass is actuated if the pounds differential Setting of the bypass, between the oil coming into the filter and the pressure allowed through the filter or say inside the filter, Is exceeded due to a clogged filter or cold thick oil on start up. In that case the valve opens and allows unfiltered oil into the engine and thereby preventing oil starvation.
The spec of oil filters that match the application have a variety of specs from Bosch at 11-17 to Hastings and WIX at 22. Some show no specs.
Location of the Bypass in the available filters is somewhat problematic so I’m hoping the head has its own filter bypass like my Sprite but I don’t see one?

#2 Re: E SI with XJ6 SIII oil filter housing-filter bypass?
If you have a genuine XJ6 filter head, there’s 2 bypasses in the system, and the pressure relief valve. One bypass is internal to the filter element, assuming you use a genuine Jaguar filter. This protects the engine if the filter is clogged, and limits the pressure drop across the filter.
The 2nd bypass is across the cooler. This protects the engine from an excessive pressure drop across the cooler. If your filter head is non genuine, then it might not necessarily have the bypass across the cooler. I’ve seen them without, but not sure who the manufacturer was. The bypass across the cooler does nothing to protect for a clogged filter, as the circuits are in series, not parallel.
If you use a non standard filter element, then check if it has an internal bypass valve.

#3 Re: E SI with XJ6 SIII oil filter housing-filter bypass?
Thanks for info.
Yes, it’s an original XJ6 SIII filter head.
So no internal bypass in the head for clogged filter /drop of pressure across the filter media.
Must depend on oil filter bypass.
Yes, Hastings and Wix both have a bypass at 22# I believe. Very simiar in size to Jag filter.
I understand the Jag EBC filter is just a Baldwin filter which is not too great a brand. If you know different would appreiate the info. Have no problem paying the little extra for the Jag filter if it is superior.
From the oil filter tear down videos WIX appears to be of better construction so going to that at this point. Suggestions based on data welcome.

I don’t know who makes the genuine Jaguar filter, but it will be made to a controlled specification and meet a set of performance requirements that are appropriate to the engine.
It may well be possible to buy a superior filter, but the Jaguar one will be good enough.

I my be wrong but I understand it’s made by same plant that make Baldwin, same filter different paint. Baldwin is not a particularly good quality filter.

Hi Tom,
I've got the same Rob Beere XJ6 S3 set up on mine and use the Fram ph2995a that Rob recommends and uses on his race engines. It has the important anti drain back valve that helps prevent oil starvation on initial cranking.
Interestingly the filter housing also has a diverter valve that closes off the oil cooler until the oil reaches a certain temperature. Peter will be along to say it's not a thermostatic valve as such and there is a whole thread somewhere covering that argument.
Just in case Fram had changed the spec of the filter as companies are prone to do, I contacted their technical department last week strangely enough and they confirmed that it is still the same and still incorporates the anti drain back valve.

#8 Re: E SI with XJ6 SIII oil filter housing-filter bypass?
Well Baldwin is made in USA so maybe Jag branded is different? Maybe pick one up and check it out.
I’ll check out the Fram too although Frams don’t fare to well on the filter comparison dissections.
Anti drain back valve is a different function from the bypass valve. It seals oil inside filter so it doesn’t drain when eng is shut off and have to fill up again on start up.
Bypass valve operates when a specified pressure differential exists between the inlet side of the filter vs the outlet(filtered oil) side of the filter to prevent blockage of the media from starving the eng of oil.
Having purchased several filters and seen many of their spec sheets for this application I can say it’s amazing how different In key characteristics various brands are for same application. Very much including quality, technique of construction, and specs other than the fact that they screw on.

Hi Layne, sorry I overlooked your part of the question about the bypass valve which as you say is a different function. It's interesting that you say "Frams don't fair well on the filter comparison dissections" as this was something I was also concerned about if they had changed the specification of the filters. When I spoke to Rob Beere, he said he had done extensive testing including flow rates and found the Fram to be best hence why he uses them on the race engines. One thing he did mention was the potential for high oil pressure in a race engine to activate the internal filter valve and thus bypass the filter when you critically don't want it to, giving no filtration. He has developed a billet filter version that accepts a Canton 8 micron filter element with the anti drawback but without the bypass valve.mtnjag wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 8:03 pm

I was tempted but it's probably not necessary on a road car although at least you would know you are getting a top spec in terms of flow and filtration with the Canton filter.
The pressure differential for the bypass valve on the Fram by the way is 1 bar

I'd be interested to see what your research brings up on other spin on oil filters.

Wow, that is a nice piece. Took a look at the Beere site and he has some nice stuff. I see he also has a return pipe for the XJ6 pressure bypass filter head on E conversions. Got one from Denis Welch/big Healey.
Yeah I will take a look at the Fram with a ref like that.
So the bypass pressure spec on the Wix and Hastings, neither of which I think are end all be all, is 22#. The Bosch is 11-17. Can’t find any specs really on the Jag EBC filter. Fram at 1bar= ~14#. Of course everything is really +/-.
I see a ph2995 on rock auto for $1.80 but don’t see a ph2995a so maybe different. The 2995 is a basic Fram filter, deserves more research.
BTW, a very interesting blog on oils and oil filters, which is done by an engineer with his own imperial test data, is Ratblog540 . He claims to be unattached to any company involved in the report. It’s quite long and you need to scroll around to discover where stuff is, with testing of something like 250 oils, and a bunch of filters. Oils and filters are rated best to worst in a logical manner. Oils tests and ratings are near the top, filters near the bottom, and there’s a section where you can send in questions and he answers it in about a day. Some of my info comes from there and that got me going on checking things out. Also switched oils which is a different can of worms which I won’t go into here!

#11 Re: E SI with XJ6 SIII oil filter housing-filter bypass?
Can’t locate a PH2995a. I can find the Fram Ph2995. Asked Fram and they said it’s ph2995. The PH 2995 is a Fram Extra Guard filter line, lower end of the Fram line.
Please don’t take offense at the following review, different application, same product line for Fram. I copied it from the Ratblog540 blog I mention above. Looked at a couple of comparo videos on line and they bare out the construction details in this blog although they weren’t so strong in their opinion.
Perhaps the PH2995a is a different filter. Change in old vs new On PH2995 is a positive change from nitrile(rubber) anti drain back valve to silicone.
I picked up a jag EBC 9658 and a Purolator Pure One to check out. Here in a few days.
Fram Extra Guard # PH10060
Made in the U.S.A.
Mounting thread is Metric 22mm x 1.5
Mounting seal OD = 2.7″, ID = 2.4″
Outer casing wall thickness = .014″
This filter holds about .35 of a quart of oil.
Its filter media provides fairly reasonable 96 square inches of filtering surface area. This oil filter claims to be 95% efficient at filtering particles larger than 20 microns. But, its filter media end caps are unbelievably cheap “CARDBOARD”, NOT metal as is normally used in quality oil filters. Cardboard has no business being inside any engine component. On top of that, the media had some areas that were NOT well glued to those end caps. And to add insult to injury, this filter has a cheap plastic bypass valve assembly, located at the bottom of the filter, where debris could enter the engine every time the bypass valve opens. If all that is not bad enough, the filter media was NOT sealed at the bottom. It just sits on a metal spring plate, so dirty oil could possibly get past that joint and into the engine without being filtered. Overall, this is among the LOWEST quality designed and constructed oil filters I have seen.

Thanks Layne that is very interesting indeed. I have a spare Fram PH2995A new in its box so am tempted now to cut it open and check what is inside. In Europe this filter is not a budget filter and retails for around $20 to $25.
I will post pictures but it will probably be Sunday. Like you, I really am keen to find out which is the best filter for our application.

So does that factory filter box or filter itself label the PH2995 with an “A” suffix?
Yes, like to hear what you find.
Can’t find the A in the USA at all. Maybe it is a different product for the European market.
Interesting.
My BMW friend suggested taking a look at a Hengst. They do make a filter for the application and based on a deconstruction video looks like quite a nice filter.

Looks very different from a US Fram: Black vs. the US orange can, different labeling as far as no “Extra Guard” designation And the Fram Europe, a different box in general, and it is clearly factory labeled A. Wonder if a European mfg is making it for Fram?
Be interesting to see what you find.
No, I don’t have any decon pics of the filter. My research at this point has been limited to decon videos, of which there seems to be an unlimited supply by those that seem qualified and others that clearly aren’t, reports like Ratblog540, factory specs and info where available, and talking to tech departments of manufacturers.
However, I am accumulating some used filters which I plan to open up, and plan to spurge and open up a filter or two I am buying. Trying to find a Hengst H24W07 for a decent price to open up.

Hi Layne,
Pics as promised below of a dissected Fram PH2995A. It seems to be of a reasonable construction and both the anti drain back and bypass valve are visible. The filter element on mine was well bonded to both the top and bottom plate. The bypass valve is in a metal housing and both valves incorporate a metal spring again seemingly well engineered.
I'm no expert so would really welcome yours and others comments based on the pictures. I can do more dissecting if required.

Just a starting point and I look forward to pictures of the ones you cut open.

Nice work. That is a very different construction than the Fram Extra Guard that I have seen decon’d here. The description in the blog and the videos show a US extra guard with cardboard ends on the filter cartridge and a very light weight bypass valve, different filter.
Is it a coil spring applying pressure to hold the filter cartridge tight in the case or a stamped metal leaf type spring? This spring is between the cartridge and the case at the bottom (opposite the thread) end.
I have tried to buy a ph2995a and can’t. Fram tech tells me the 2995a is not available in US-they know nothing about it, They do show the PH2995 for the application.
Also, I can’t find a local store at this point, private or national chain, that sells Fram anymore! On line sellers but none of the locals. Very surprised. Must be someone but many have definitely either dropped or lost the line.
I’ll have to buy a PH2995 on line I guess a will cut it. Cost will be $16 Amazon. I have filters coming and will start to cut some in next day or two. Some won’t be here for a bit. Trying to find them as reasonable as possible, gets expensive.

Hi Layne, it is a coil spring, again of seemingly good quality. I'm not sure what the situation is in the US but here in Europe we are plagued by online retailers selling counterfeit products. I wonder if the filter you mention is a cheap copy? I bought mine from a local reputable Motor Parts Distributor.mtnjag wrote: ↑Sun Jul 05, 2020 1:03 pmNice work. Anyway I am a little more re assured now I've cut the filter open, I was all for spending $300 on the Rob Beere one when you mentioned cardboard end caps.
