#1 Wiring Harness Fabric Cover Frayed

Post by CompassRDB » Thu Jul 09, 2020 4:08 am

Hi... I was curious as to how folks have dealt with frayed covering over the wiring harness. The wires appear to be fine, no need to install an entire new harness, but I would like to clean up the covering... what have you used to do so... electric tape, place in plastic conduit (which was done in my car and some of them have melted), fabric tape or ribbon? I have been detailing the engine under the bonnet and would like the wiring to look as nice as the rest of the components.

Thx

Well Bob if you lived in the UK you could use the services of Autosparks which offer a rebinding service at a price per foot - it is a quite intricate machine which does the work . You would have to remove the loom from the car though - .

I always use Tesa 51026 tape to replace the covering on under bonnet loom wiring (and elsewhere). It is the correct high temperature tape for the job and makes for a very neat finish.

Just be warned that it sticks so easily to nitrile gloves that this is a job best done bare-handed, and just use Swarfega afterwards.

I've used a quality self-amalgamating tape. Once applied it is impervious to liquids with a matt black finish that doesn't leach out on things like cloth tapes do.

By the time of Series 2 cars the original loom used cloth tape at junctions and a mixture of cotton braiding and PVC tape wrap for the loom outer covering.

You may have your original wiring harness re-woven by:

RIWire.com or BritishWire.com here in America. I've used their service in the past and was well pleased with the covering. Came back looking as Factory New.

Now where did I put that part....???

Started replacing the old frayed loom cover with the TESA tape... looks really sharp and cleans up the engine compartment nicely.

Thx
