#1 '63 FHC restoration: bolts on bottom of door frame?

Post by lukedc » Wed Aug 19, 2020 5:26 am

Hi,

I'm restoring a 63 FHC and currently working on the very rusty doors. I'm replacing the bottom of the door frame and have a repair panel fashioned using a sheet metal brake which is a good fit (after much adjustment). The problem I'm having is with the internal bolts on the bottom of the door frame for the window frame; these pass through the bottom of the frame and appear welded in place (at least they don't appear to be brazed as I can't budge them with heat). Any advice on how to replace these with the new repair panel as they are not a standard bolt but have a flat head on the outside of the door frame?

Cheers Luke

Take a standard set screw and machine the hex head on the lathe to resemble what you have and then braze into door. The machined screws will not be quite right as the originals had a larger 'head'. As I expect you know these fix the chrome door frame in the door. You could re-use the originals if not damaged.

Hi Luke,

They are sort of spot welded to the frame. They can be cut out and re used, but I think I did as Barrie suggested and turned up some new ones from 1/4 UNF bolts (set screws) and brazed them on.

Having said that, it is a long time ago now and looking at my pictures, I may have re-used the originals.
