#1 Steering Wheel Motif Removal Advice?

Post by VooDooDaddy » Thu Nov 05, 2020 11:06 pm

Hi All,

This is my first post and I can certainly use some expert advice.

I inherited my mother's crumbling 1970 Series II FHC and I would like to remove and refurbish the steering wheel. Unfortunately, the service manuals are a little vague about removing the plastic motif.

Can anyone offer any advice on how to safely remove it without damaging it?

Here are a couple pictures. From what I understand, the central plastic part (green) should just pop out from the retaining ring (red).

You have to remove 3 little grub screws from behind the steering wheel boss with an Alan key. The horn boss they just lifts out. There is a spring so mind you do not lose it.

Thanks, Tony.

I guess I should have mentioned that I had removed the grub screws per the instructions in the service manual prior to posting. (I was shocked to see that they are slotted screws! :wow: )

I'll try again to lift it out.

Okay. I got it out.

I was confused about what actually is removed. I had a steering column cross-sectional diagram and the picture from the previous post showing the back of the wheel, but nothing indicating what the "Motif" assembly actually consisted of.
