#1 FINISHED!
And so, almost 5 years to the day after starting work on the first pieces, I present to you all (on a slightly damp car park!) my 4.2 OTS.
Just a shame I can't drive it, but I'll bring it along to the next forum meet
I am, overall, quite pleased with it. Aimed for perfection, came reasonably close, and it looks shiny.
I may task myself with making a tool roll / hammer for the boot and maybe a set of fittef luggage, but all in good time!

Thanks, James. I've fooled a few people already!
This little project demonstrates a classic trait of mine. You'll all laugh at this, but I'm not creative.
I say creative, what I tend to refer to is "freehand creative" - ask me to draw that now, it'd be terrible. Ask me to draw an E-Type (or anything) from memory and it'd be terrible.
Give me a scale model and say "replicate this" without a defined plan of how to do it (I used a very simple template for the OTS back end, the rest was just straight out of my mind) and I can do it. The eye for detail helps in my line of work doing my PhD, but can also rather get in the way when I need to crack on!
When the model looked like this:
Or this:
I genuinely thought I'd bitten off more than I could chew. It was only once It was a painted shell did I think I could actually do the rest!

That looks great Simon, congratulations!
So are you now available for scale replicas of members cars? I’m sure you’d have a few takers!

#9 Re: FINISHED!
Thank you everyone
Having done two of these now (one in ca. 3 months and one in 5 years) I'm not sure I could attempt another.
In terms of man hours, I dare bet there's 1,000 hours in that OTS (building, painting, researching, head scratching, sourcing bits, 500 hours constantly fixing the front suspension (!) etc.) which is a hell of a lot for one thing.
In terms of price? Not really sure. Richard bought me the kit a long time ago now. The unbuilt kits are now going for 500 ish quid on eBay, they are now no longer available new. Puts the DeAgostini model's prices into context certainly.
A question I keep asking myself (don't know why, not sure that I'll ever have an answer) is how much it's actually worth now. Probably not that much, or as much a collector would be willing to pay for it! I'm not selling it in any case. Those 1:8 diecast models from Jaguar were in the range of 8-10K, but they are a completely different kettle of fish to a homemade plastic injection kit - which still has its imperfections and inaccuracies.
Food for thought though!
Andrew - what a lovely project and an excellent result. I would love to be able to do machining like that with all the right equipment.

I've enjoyed watching your progress over the years Simon. However, for the final and finishing touch in authenticity you need to add the oil leak on the pavement beneath the engine.
