These Gunson instructions are ambiguous as well as misleading. Clearly you need to take both measurements on ONE wheel, but they tell you to use BOTH wheels to set the steering angle, ignoring Herr Ackerman. But some may read it as an instruction to take one measurement for each wheel on one side and the second measurement on the opposite side, which could give interesting results.rfs1957 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 27, 2014 10:41 am
PS The Gunson instructions are not misleading for those "with a misapprehension" ........ they are simply wrong ; try reading them. They explicitly tell you that you measure the caster by measuring the difference between camber at 20? turned-right on the right-hand wheel, and 20? turned-left on the left-hand wheel ! .......
Talking of interesting results, I just bolted my suspension back together after a complete rebuild. I didn't add any shims as I was starting from scratch. I set the toe-in with a tape measure before going round the block a few times to settle everything in.
I now find that I have zero degrees camber on the left and negative 2 degs on the right. I have 3.75 degrees caster on the left and 4 degrees on the right. The toe-in is probably accurate within 1/4" - I haven't measured it properly yet.
What makes this interesting is that it drove perfectly while so far out of whack. The steering wasn't the least bit heavy and it ran true on the road.
Now I have to get shimming I suppose. I wonder if I will notice any difference?
