#1 BW transmission pressure

Post by alfred » Mon Feb 01, 2021 2:18 am

After waiting a while to get my carbs rebuilt, I finally got the car back and I was told that my kickdown cable was sticking, and was preventing the throttle linkage from a full return to idle. I finally got the cable moving smoothly, throttle working well, so I thought I would check the tranny pressure as per shop manual. For some reason my BW tranny does not have the pressure port on the left side, but I read that a few had a port on the right side. I pulled the plug on that side and connected a pressure gauge but could not get any reading (in gear, brakes on, revs at 1250). Only thing that happened was I lost reverse gear… got it back when I replaced the plug. I switched to another gauge but still not getting any pressure reading. So, where else would I look for a pressure port if neither side has one?

Hi Alfred,
if you "plug" a port with the gauge, there shoud not be a loss of pressure (ie loss of gear), since it is a dead end for the fluid; sounds like air in the hose to the gauge. Connect hose to port, disconnect gauge and wait until oil comes out; try without starting first, or start only for a few seconds - remember that transmission pressure is dangerously high!

loosing reverse made me think that the port I opened was the wrong one. But since there was no port on the driver's side it seemed like the passenger side port was only other one to try. Is there another spot that I could search for to try test tranny pressure?

thanks Bob, looks like the mystery port is in a location back and low on the left side of the tranny. not at all like the illustrations in the Haynes manual. 3 days wasted pulling carpets and switching out pressure gauges... these cars sure are fun to wrench on. I'll let you know how it goes later this week.
