#1 Stud hubs converting to spline..

Post by Paul bow » Thu Sep 23, 2021 8:40 pm

Hi guys..
I just purchased a 69 roadster e type, the wheels are same as a S3, not to my taste .. so wishing to replace them with wire wheels, so obviously needing to replace the stud hub to the spline type, question is, is that just a case of swapping the studded hub to that of the spline or more involved??
Thank you 👍

Hello Paul,
Basically yes. The front is relatively easy, as no special tools are required to set up the wheel bearings. The rear will require either the special Spacer Tool JD15, or a spacer thicker than required to give you measurable End Float, so as to be able to calculate the correct thickness spacer to use. The procedure for both the front and rear bearing set up is covered well in the repair manual for the car.

Regards,

Bill

Hello Paul,
The rears aren't a walk in the park, as the hub carrier and half shaft assemblies have to be removed from the IRS unit. Most times the Hub/Hub Carrier assembly will have to be pressed off, or a special tool configured like JD.1D will have to be used to remove your Wheel Stud style Hubs from the splined axle of the half shafts.

Read the section of the repair manual dealing with replacing rear wheel bearings before you start the job, so as to be some what familiar with the process.

Regards,

Bill

Yes and thanks Bill..
I remember that being a real pain of a job, in the end I gave it to Alan slawson who is the guru on diffs/irs to rebuild for me, I’ll prob do that again, but it was more of a case at this time if the hub carriers were different in some way, you have cleared that matter up as it seems that they are the same and with exception to getting them off and set up, the rest is a straight replace... thanks Bill 👍
