Starter failure ....!

I have since some days a intermittent issue when i start the engine :
I hear a "click" when i push the starter button at the dash once or until 8 trys and then the starter works engage....
I have checked at the connector thinking it was something loosed but found nothing .
What can be the culprit ? Starter relay ?
My starter is a "almost new" one from SNG B

Have you got the spacer ring in place?

Sounds like solenoid to me. Had that dreaded click on my TR4 when solenoid was dodgy

Spacer ring??? , separate solenoïd I think so .... my starter seems to have two components gathered




How can i check the solenoïd?

Is you starter an aftermarket high torque unit?....Steve

I think so but i must confirm at SNG

The unit by the battery is a starter solonoid and your starter motor also has a starter solonoid by the looks of it....you need to start testing the electrics....your start button operates and you here a click.....so whats clicking....is it the solonoid by the battery......does this then extent the power through to your starter motor?.....Steve

I have to test that , but need of course someone by the engine to diagnose where the click comes from....!

Yves.....disconnect the battery.........switch on ignition.....press in start button and hold in place with a stick or similar......go to the battery. ...just touch on the disconnected connector.......you should hear the clicking....Steve

'll try that tomorow. May be i can squeeze the connector near the battery if what i thought is a solenoid

The wiring to the starter is direct from the battery the big wire is connected on the same "bolt" on the old solenoid . So i think that it's my starter which is not operating sometimes . I don't think i can replace the solenoid "binded" close to the starter . i'll resove to replace it .
I am not happy to do that because i have to take out the central console for acces to the upper nut of the starter....

Hi Yves...i thought thete was an access hole to get to the top bolt without removeing center consul.....have a good look under the bulkhead carpet.....think its a large grommet/removable panel.....Steve https://themotorphile.com/2010/11/22/ja ... n-starter/
