Just for info Fossway list FPS 581 for 3.8 ring gear/4.2 bellhouseing.......FPS 580 for 4.2 ring gear/3.8 bellhouseing......Steve

Myles, I thought about Rob,
But the issue is that the pinion has the correct amount of teeth to my flywheel. The problem is that the starter is positioned incorrectly.
What I do not understand is that I actually started the engine couple of times with this combination, and there was no problem.
Once the engine was in the car I changed the bolts and I guess the starter moved slightly.
So, I guess the offset that is needed is not that great.
However, as Steve said, the fixing bolts could be repositioned somehow, The question is just how to reposition them - especially challenging with the engine in the car.

I would really love to keep the original starter in the car, as I am trying to keep the car as original as possible. However my urge to keep it original stops short of taking the engine out now when everything is assembled...

Hi Tadek...yes i think the 581....but discuss with fossways telling them what flywherl and bellhouseing you have....and ask if their starter will need the spigot plate (spacer)....Steve

The 3.8 starter and flywheel will mate together fine - I assume the flywheel is late 3.8 which is dual drilled for the spring clutch and the diaphagm clutch. You cannot use a 4.2 bell housing though as the starter mountings are different - which I think is the reason for your jam up. The obvious solution would be to use the 3.8 'S' type (thats old 'S' type) or 2.8 XJ6 bell housing which means you can use the all synchro gearbox and the 3.8 starter as this was the same set up on both of those saloons.

Thanks Barry, however it I would prefer NOT to take the engine out - the car is almost ready after over one year of assembly...

Before I took the starter out, I tried to tae a few shots to see how did the starter jam, but all I got is this:
- from the bottom, showing the pinion did not disengage:
Image

from the top, flywheel tooth visible bottom left corner:

BTW - taking the starter out is a hell of a challenge!!

The nuts from the front are impossible to take out as there is no space for any key so the only way to remove the bolts from the back. The top one is ok, but the bottom one is quite a challenge!

I had to engage my 13 year old daughter today to fit the bottom nut to the starter - how do you do it without a daughter???? :?: :?: It's plain impossible to fit one's hand between the bellhousing and the car body!!

Also, we have mounted the starter on the car today and when I connect the battery and turn the ignition key, it makes a ticking sound (like trying to engage solenoid?) When I measure the voltage between the power cable & earthing it measures 0V
When I actually press the starter button, it does start cranking the engine.
Weird.

It’s an e-type 3.8, all original electrics, except it' negative earth.

I have shortened the exciter wire to the main battery connection.

Am I doing something wrong??

Hi Tadek...the starter has 2 circuits. ....the one from the startr button to the solonoid....and the heavy circuit from the battery to the starter.....as you press the starter you should hear a click of the solonoid.....thus should then operate the starter.......so whats the ticking?.....do you have a starter relay?........should be a fairly easy circuit to check out.....are the earths ok.....Steve

Yes, The instructions say (unless I understand them wrong) that for replacement of inertia type starters you should shorten the 2 together.

Weird. Why the turning-on of the ignition key sends any power to the starter?.

I will try to troubleshoot later on today. Have to do some work.

Have you checked and cleaned ALL earth points ( even run a temp jump lead from earth pole to engine ) and main 12v lead too
Its a way of life not a hobby

Many thanks Darren, it was my thought.

However, I started tracing the problem by simply disconnecting all cables coming to the solenoid switch.
It turned out it was the wire that came through the control box to the white wires fuse box.
There were a lot of cables there, so I started connecting them one by one and when I connected all of them .... the problem disappeared.

I run negative earth. It seemed like the starter solenoid or the starter was polarized somehow. I guess.
I am not sure, and I wish I know better what the problem was. I need to start driving the car when winter goes away..

I love the fact that this post begins with potentially a 'seized engine' and concludes with essentially a loose wire...
