Radiator Grille

The upper chrome trim around the bonnet grille on my s3 ots had some spring clips in the back, they sat loose inside the trim and could be slid along to the required position, these clips pushed into holes along the lip of the bonnet to hold the trim tightly in position. As the old one had several dings in it I have bought a replacement trim but I cannot find the clips and SNG say they have never heard of them and the trim should only be held by a rivet at either end, has anyone else come across these clips or is mine the only one like this?

Hi Steve,
Thats the same drawing that Martin Robey use and the clips are not shown, neither are they on the SNG drawing.
The above would seem to indicate they are not original but they certainly seem to go with the trim and the trim even has small notches to allow the clips to be fed into the channel.
As the car is currently being prepped for painting I need to decide if we should weld up the holes and rely on just the rivets at either end.

They are definitely original - maybe some parts suppliers need to update their parts list.

The clips I am referring to sit inside the trim and protrude from the back into holes in the bonnet rim, once the trim is in place they are not visible, there are 4 of them along the length of the trim at equal spacings as well as the two at the ends which you have pointed out.

I have not got it with me but have done a rough sketch, I am doubtful that this trim is only held on at the very ends

Hello Kev,
The clip you show in your drawing is a generic moulding clip, but definitely not the original type used to hold the top grille moulding of the S3 E Type. There were also a small number of S2 cars fitted with the upper and lower moulding used on the S3 cars, but without the grille. The majority of automotive mouldings are similar in width and are constructed in a similar manner. Accordingly, its not surprising that you will find a myriad of clip design that serve a similar purpose.

Four clips in all are used to hold the moulding in place, two button, pop rivet type and two small metal bracket type.

Correctly fitted, the top moulding is really a terrible fit. It looks like it fits well looking down on it, but the lower edge sits well clear of the surface of the bonnet; you will only see that if you were to lay on your back and look up at the bottom edge of the moulding.

The rusty looking clips are the metal bracket clips I referred to and in addition to these two clips, two round button, pop rivet clips are used.

Ahhh! all is clear, those clips sit inside the trim and screw to the underside of the nose, that's that sorted.

Bill, My clips fell out during storage and I only noticed they were missing when packing parts up - I will look in the cupboard where everything was stored to see if they are there.

Hi - I just checked on the SNGB UK website. The clips referred to are listed as: Stainless Steel Grille Moulding Clip BD39095.
After fitting these clips I found that the rivets are not really necessary to fit as the bumper overriders hold the
moulding well in position at the corners and sides (or as well as can be reasonably expected).
As I'm sure you're aware, riveting can have unexpected consequences for paintwork!

Yes Steve you are correct, I was looking for/trying to determine the ones I had on mine which it turns out were incorrect, now I have seen the correct clip in use they are indeed on all the parts drawings, it's hard to understand why the PO would not have used the correct clips.

Now ordered, I will trial fit while we are at the bare metal stage.

I am still not 100% sure of which colour paint to go with, I am currently sticking to dark BRG but every time I see one in signal red I have second thoughts as they do look good, I don't know why I keep imposing these headaches upon myself.

Hello Kev,
The task at hand for the PO was to secure the chrome moulding and the clip used, the type you have, would have done the job. As I wrote in an earlier Post, there are many clips that will serve the purpose of the original clip used by Jaguar. I suspect that the PO simply sourced the clip used from an Auto Parts store that was more convenient and most likely cheaper than the original, correct part.

THe top curved chrome moulding around the air intake is held in place by two 'button' pop rivets.

The chrome clips previously shown are to cover the ends of the top and bottom mouldings where they meet at the side.

The pic is of an unmolested S3 sans chrome mouldings and bumpers.

Plus two BD39095 clips; the originals were Zinc or Cadmium plated mild steel. hence the rusty appearance of the clips in Craig's picture.

The only other clips on my S3 radiator intake top chrome mouldings are BD38867.
These clips sit at either end of the chrome moulding and fit OVER the strip ends and are secured with a self tapper.
I do not have, and cannot visualise how they are used, the BD39095 clips.
Where are they on the parts drawing?
