Changing Rear Wheel Bearings, Finding Shims ?

This post started off about shims and morphed into changing bearings.



I did search around a bit before posting, and remembered with some pleasure the erudite, and generally well-mannered, exchange we had here :

Irrespective of whether you're of the pre-load or end-float schools, they both depend on the thickness of the C.19110 series of 0.109" to 0.151" shims/spacers.

HOWEVER my usual SNGB regular is showing no availability on the sizes I was going to stock up on .............

And it's a row of three adjacent references, so there's no sign that re-stocking them is imminent.

Is there a better source for these, please ?

I have a stack of them, but am inconveniently located :-)

To be honest it wouldn't be very hard to make them...

Thanks for offers and advice, I have made them in the past but as both hubs are in the same ballpark it doesn’t seem to be a waste of 50€ to have H J K L M in stock and feel confident In the luxury of just opening a packet to dial in the perfect adjustment - a figure which stirs strong sentiment nevertheless.

Andy at Hutsons is looking to see what he’s got, tho if anyone had a drawer full I’d be all ears and cheque book.

Some thoughts on re-fiting the bearing tracks.

There's no need to use a press to do this, and many advantages in not doing so - far less risk of the races going in off-cock, and taking a shaving off the bore.



This DRAPER tool set could have been made for working on Jags, the two rings shown were perfectly sized for the rear wheel-bearings, and I've lost count of the number of times I've used them for other jobs.





I boiled the rear hub-carrier up as seen, froze the bearing tracks in the freezer, and the temperature differential means that the tracks just literally drop in. A tap on the centre drift confirms the dead-seating ring, music to our ears. The risk to be aware of is that when you do the second side, the first side may still be loose and can move.



I use a drop of Loctite bearing-fit in contexts like these,just to be sure, but this method requires no peripheral hammering or juggling with spacers and anvils on a press that essentially gives you zero feedback.
