I'm sorry but I just can't get excited by a 5 speed gearbox. My BMW has an 8 or possibly 10 speed box, paddle shifters, the lot, and I have no involvement whatever with it. I have come to love the somewhat archaic feel of that magnificent XK engine pulling the car strongly away in the rather tall first gear, and the broad flat torque curve that means you just don't have to change gear that often. 4th gear at the national speed limit is pretty leisurely too.

And cutting out pieces of the crossmember is not for me thanks.

I have had a 5 speed (a T5) in my OTS for about 20 years and for driving through Europe it has been superb. Changes are lightning fast with no worries about touchy synchromesh. It is only one more gear so you don't have to use it if you want to be a purist

My FHC still has its Moss box which does catch me out after driving the OTS and takes a while to get used to again. But in effect it is a 3 speed as 1st is all but useless other than to get rolling but also a joy to drive.

Only change I would make to the OTS is to bin the 2.88 diff for a 3.07.

Don't worry Joey, most of us here are "stiff upper lipped" Brits. We don't get excited or sycophantic about these things. We just quietly get on with it.

You guys are great!
I completely understand as after the work was complete, I took the 575M for a drive.
I had a 550 with 3 pedals new but that was years ago.
Now driving the F1 with ice cold A/C and stereo and real leather , it sure is a wonderful thing.
Hopefully I recieve the clutch and all back soon.
Hope these steps are helping in the event someone is thinking about the same....

Heuer I went with the 307 as well with this car as many in the states started with a 3;54.
The 307 is the sweet spot , with the 5 th it just makes 70/80/90 civilized for long , long runs.
Plus as others have said, Even GTJOEY is getting older, 20 years ago the 4 speed was fine, now itjust feels so slow and wound up.
But at least we have these options. Its the only car from the 1960s that can really pull it off. IMHO

I wanted the British touch, if I wanted perfection I’d find a German but that’s too boring

Hi Jeremy,if you had A Moss Box,you would be very exited about a fivespeed box with unbeatable synco.I often start off in 2nd at traffic lights to avoid that slow change from first to second causing the person in a full size pickup or suv to run into the back of me!

If you have a pure survivor or restored 100 point show car
I understand.
But …I really enjoy my Etype coupe, I’ve had them
All , installing modern ignition, brakes , tires, lights and a whole host of other modern and SAFETY improvements translates into almost 10,000 miles this past year without a single hiccup.
It’s not fun coming up to a light as others have said , people up your trunk or the millisecond the light turns green everyone blows you away or cuts you off.
NO one cares now it’s kill or be killed on MOST roads .
With all my upgrades and the 4 speed I was able to keep up but on B roads where the speed limit is 30 mph people are running you off the road at 75/80
You need 5 th gear………Imho

I suppose there is some logic behind this statement, but what, please, is it ?

Chris , I can keep up with a 307 rear at 3,000 rpm at 70.
But after driving a new car at 70 your at 1,600 rpm without a touch of vibration, drone or revs.
It’s just a more pleasant ride.
There is a sweat spot that only the Etype can produce.
A 250 Lusso looks the part, drive it more than a mile in any sort of traffic and you will turn it around to the garage.
Maserati 3500 even worse, forget American cars they don’t turn or stop!
I was one of the first to convert to EZ steering of the latest design ,it transforms the car if you dial it all in with Michelins, 6 inch wheels , it’s just a much much much better ride imho
Ps never touch the body though no matter what

The flywheel is being worked on
Cleaned up, mated to new clutch and pressure plate!
Note Guy Broad box has there own clutch spline set up
C j is letting me use the alignment tool then I will send it back.
Almost all good to go

Joey, I read that a lightened flywheel can create some noise, vibration, juddering at idle and in first gear at low revs. I think I saw it on the “Driven man” website. What is your experiences. Love your modifications on a etype that is intended to be driven!
