I follow Joey's threads for two major reasons, although there is a third reason that I'll get to at the end. The first reason is the most obvious. Joey tends to be a ground breaker in terms of making modification to a 60 year old car design that are intended to make it safer, more enjoyable, and/or more reliable. Many of the older folks take issue with this as they tend to be purists, which is fine if thats your belief. But if you don't like the modification, keep it to yourself, too many folks feel the need to weigh in on the mistaken belief that their way is right, so every other way must be wrong. Nonetheless, I read Joey's thread primarily to see what he's attempting to do, to see if I might like to take on that project too. As my Mom used to say, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything"

The second reason, I follow Joey's threads is to to enjoy his off-beat sense of politically incorrect humor. Most of you don't really know Joey personally and think poorly of him because of how you interpret what he is saying or take him literally. However, to those of us who really know Joey, we find him to be generous with his time and money for many worthwhile charities. He has a following of guys like me that go to him for unvarnished advice on our cars. He gets right to the point and doesn't wring his hands in anguish over suggesting a change that benefits the workings of the car, and has been correct in his diagnosis every single time I've asked for assistance. In my professional life, I've worked with many New Yorkers and have come to appreciate their view of the world and how they convey those thoughts. I inevitably find myself smirking if not outright laughing at his posts.

The third reason and it is most definitely a guilty pleasure is to see how he can irritate some of you with what he's saying and how he says it. If this thread could have all those unnecessary responses removed, you'd find that this thread is an encyclopedia of information on installing a 5 speed transmission. If you have no plans on installing one and are so offended by Joey's postings, then why are you here?

While some of you were intent on expressing your engineering prowess at explaining a reduction in strength/rigidity by 20%, no one knows to what degree the original design was over-engineered or even what stresses are encountered by that section of the car under normal operating conditions to know if 20% is actually meaningful.

It only took 18 pages to realise that very conclusion......apart from the 5 speed, can’t wait to find out what you had to do massaging the tunnel.....

Hi all......this thread is going way off track now.....its supposed to be about fitting a 5 speed gearbox.....This is the E type forum and this is the technical section.......I would now like to see the thread just get back to the 5 speed and anything related to its installation and performance........so please think very carefully about what you post.....so no more personl comments.......I will now be deleting or editing anymore non E type or 5 speed related posts.....and we dont really want any "politically incorrect humor". ...thank.....Steve ( moderator)

Thats great, Steve. Although, on that rationale, post number 362 should be deleted.

Going to pick up the hand held vacuum bleeder
With the NEW Rob Beeres Clutch Slave kit
It will extract the air PAST the cylinder and up the hose to the intake manifold.
Pics to follow!

I would highly recommend the Rob Beeres bleed kit!
It looks kookie but works
All I did was back off the adjustment rod
Filled my Willwood master crack open the bottom bleeder then once fluid came out I closed it
Lowered the car opened the top valve vacuumed the fluid and it was all done as a one man job!
Then I adjusted the rod with a little play and so far so good!
Once the top panel is on I will send you the cuts!
It looks real ugly but once done
It’s well worth it!
More to come!
Very quiet , very smooth no gear rattle or bearing winding sounds

Sounds great, so far so good, looks like good temp and oil pressure, I noticed your Amp meter is not showing a reading or am I mistaken?

Dww , Thank you!
The Amp gauge is working fine must be the angle.
Our next steps are as follows
1.Cover the new opening
2. Cover transmission make fit
3 screw down top cover and seal
Welllllll
Hold on boys here comes the hard pictures!
All that was cut is being replaced, updated and massaged along with access plugs
There is no structural cuts up top
Remember boys I did it right if you want to sleep at night and not worry

Okay……
There is NO way this box fits in any standard wheelbase without the following cuts.
Some shift the transmission to the right but I’m not happy with a cocked set up at all
The bulk of the u joint area was hitting the recess for the emergency brake arm
All overkill
Our goal is to use the original console and or custom as not to distort the middle section to much.
I massaged the belt line all way round for complete room and no doubt in heavy turns
Enjoy!

Monday we will have a 1 piece cover as you can see Steve was making a template
It will be screwed down and sealer applied
It will have a plug with an access hole to get to the prop shaft
Anything worse we just unscrew the plate!
Once you see the final cover it will look natural stock!
That will be next Monday night
I’ve been driving with that hole for 60 miles no bend😀

This is ALOT of work
But after todays drive and no leaks and just a truly modern feel it was well worth it.
CJ and Broad have done so many that they have their own made panels but mine is pretty close.
More to come!
Questions
It’s very VERY nice
If you have a shot to buy one and CJ or Guy Broad is local let them do it
It’s a lot of work
Love it

Hey Joey

"If you have a shot to buy one and CJ or Guy Broad is local let them do it
It’s a lot of work"

There I totally agree with you, when my car restoration was completed the car ran nice for a few miles and then while idling on the driveway there was a big bang and after that the clutch was toast. It transpired the release bearing got somehow shuttered. I knew this would be an engine out job so I contacted Guy Broad to carry out the repairs on the clutch and go over the rest of the car mechanics.

I then decided since I had the Moss crash box to also do a few upgrades including a 5 speed box. We also decided to go ahead with an alternator and change to negative earth. During his inspection a few additional things were uncovered among them the steering rack needed rebuilding and some bolts on the IRS haven't been wired.

When the car came out several thousands of pounds later it was a dream to drive, I later upgraded the front brakes to 4 pot with vented discs (DIY) and changed the amp meter to a volt meter. Now she drives and feels like a modern car though I only clocked a smidge over 1000 miles....then the header tank sprang a leak and you know the rest

I cant agree more...
Thats where the hobby is going.
If your a certain age and have the money ,Take advantage of the FEW that are left unless you enjoy it.
I used to enjoy and still do but its a lot harder when you get older.
In the next couple of days I will drive through all the gears and fill up with the interior complete.
Did you go GUY BROAD 5 speed?
It really is wonderful, the gears are so long and smooth.
I hope this helps others, its not an easy job. But when done, you know every inch of the car!
