Seat Leather

I took off the leather cover to repair some torn stitching on the passenger seat squab and noticed the underside of the leather had been signed 'Beryl':




and, (yes, I've used a comma!!) I also noticed that on the hardboard edging, the letter W or M had been put in with staples. On replacing the leather, I reinstated the initial with new staples in the original location:



This is the first time the seat leather had been removed.

I wonder if Beryl is still alive??

Has anyone else seen the same or similar on their leather seats?

Assuming she was 20/25 in 1964/5 she was possibly born 1939/1944 therefore could be 78/93 years old today. If she was an older lady in 1965 so she probably passed by now.

No other mention of "Beryl" on a quick search of the forum.....but i have seen a few names on the seat covers.........Steve

Yes, I'd worked out that at best she (Beryl) could be the same age as me, having been born in 1945.

I did have a 1934 Aston Martin dhc and all the woodwork had the craftsman's signature on back of every piece!

The workers in the Factory 'Blue Room' (upholstery department) were on piece rate and paid by the number of items they completed per day. Each worker signed their work or, where this was impractical, used a device to identify them selves, hence the W/M mark. The paint shop, who were also on piece rate, used a stamp:

In this example the stamp was placed in the number plate recess.

My 68 coupe seats also had a staple M/W. Also a handwritten name which I haven't been able to decipher.
