#1 Door seal retainer fixing

Post by UK Muppet » Thu Jun 29, 2023 10:06 pm

Can anyone please give advice on fixing the seal retainers on the A post. I know they are pop riveted but both my pneumatic pop riveter and my lazy tongs have heads that are larger in diameter than the gap in the retainer. I know some people have riveted from the inside and then spent god knows how long trimming the seals to clear the pop rivet. I don't have the patience to do that and its not how they were built so need to find an alternative method. I suppose I could make a new smaller diameter head for the rivet gun but curious as to how others have overcome this problem as it must have been done many times. I have searched the forum but cannot find anything regarding the riveting.
Thanks
Tony

I had a similar issue when fixing the cups that hold the headlight trims in place.
Solved by slipping a small nut over the shaft of the pop rivet. This spaced out the head of the gun just far enough togive clearance whilst still allowing the shaft t9 be gripped.

May be worth a try

The method proposed by Steve is what I used when fixing the heater transfer pipes - so that definitely works!

Thanks for the responses, the nozzle on my pneumatic gun was very shallow, basically nothing there to grind away if I still wanted to retain the hexagon portion which is only about 3/32" wide. So I had a root around and found an old set screw that screwed in place of the nozzle, this allowed me to turn a new nozzle that fits inside the retainer channel. Just under 1/4" dia was required, so all should work out okay now.

Aren't they held in with small cs st screws right through into the inside capping? My 1/4 light ones were, the fronts were missing.
