Wiper Motor 5-way connector block clamp C2796

My car is drilled for this, although I can find no reference to it in any J30 listings, be it body, wiper motor, or electrical accessories.



The one shown is a rather amateur attempt.

I searched with all sorts of keywords to no avail on either the Forum or on SNGB, but finally ran them aground here :

That is the wrong bracket Rory! From our 'Factory Fit' thread:

The bump in the bracket is to accomodate a 6th solo connector.

Should this be present on S2 cars or do they have a different setup?

The C.2796 bracket is used for the 5 way headlamp connector on RH side of bonnet and C.2532 bracket for the 8 way connector on the LH side of the bonnet. The S2 uses bracket C.1040/14 to secure the wiper harness to the bulkhead.

Is this proof Lucas couldn't be ar--d to make a 6-way connector ?

Use a single connector on one of them; it tucks into a groove and if you look at David's post above the correct bracket has a little bulge for it.

It's a tight fit but it does work.

Would anyone have an original one to hand ?

I've now got the SNGB version.

My car has two 3/16" holes at 1-1/2" separation, or say on 38mm centres.

The SNGB bracket's holes will not even take an 1/8" rivet, and they are on 41mm centres.

Well, "bend it tighter and drill the holes out", I hear you say.



Except the connectors are such a tight fit already that they will be crushed by 3mm of squeezing.

In fact if I were to clamp the bracket against any flat surface, even without the sideways squeeze, they will be deformed, such is the tight fit.

I'm also intrigued by the fact the steel sheet used is 1.5mm thick, or 60 thou, which seems massively excessive - it's a clip, for heaven's sake.

What was the Jaguar one like, please ?

There are only 5 wires that need to be connected, the sixth (black) is an earth which can have a ring terminal secured to one of the wiper mounting bolts. originally it used a bullet connector as shown above but the repro connectors are too thick so either source an original or make your own bracket to fit.

Measuring in situ, so not 100% correct perhaps, my original bracket is 19mm from the firewall face to the inside flat face of the bracket, and is somewhat less than 1mm thick. Bends on the original are much more crisp, and center to center mounting is about 37mm.

SNG seem to frequently get their sheetmetal products dimensions and thicknesses wrong (this bracket, radiator fan shroud lower brackets, bonnet latch brackets, are some that come to mind as items I've tossed as unsuitable)

The 5 wires are indeed required for my ensemble, David, you may have forgotten the separate green one to the LHS of the wiring diagram

I’ll send this bracket back ; would it cost more to make ones that fitted ?

The wiring diagram shows the switch on the left and the motor on the right. The green wire is in the dash and connected to the switch (as is the red/white for the park) and not wired to the motor

The original connector is a 4 way (Lucas did not produce a 5 way) so Jaguar added a single extra connector with a bracket to match. The hole in the centre of the 4 way is not meant to be for a connector but there to allow for compression. So 5 wires connecting the motor with the sixth black wire going to an adjacent earth.

Interesting point that David, about the 4-way having a 5th hole.

I had understood that there was indeed a true 5-way connector, as seen here :

I'm puzzled by your interpretation of the diagram you have shown, as the famous Coventry Auto booklet sold by Autosparks, showing a detailed breakdown of the different circuits, seen above and below, ties in perfectly with their loom.





The Autosparks Series 1 loom has 6 wires going to the wiper motor, which is April 1962.



Harness : Red/Green - Yellow/Green - White/Green - Brown/Green - Blue/green - Green



Motor : Red/Green - Yellow/Green - White/Green - Brown/Green - Blue/Green - Green/Black

(the earth on the motor is direct/separate and not in the loom)

My understanding is that the switch is on the right of your diagram (which is why the poles are numbered, as is the switch) and has 5 wires plus an earth, with the motor on the left of the diagram, having 6 wires plus an earth that is not shown.

The title should perhaps have read Screenwiper Motor and Switch ?

I should have remembered the DL3 motor is always 'live' and the switch provides the earth, which is counter intuitive. The S2 15W wiper motor works the opposite, the switch provides a live and the motor is earthed. Sorry for the confusion! My car has the Lucas DL3A wiper motor which is three wire and has the park switch on the motor itself. It was used only on S1.5 LHD cars despite being a far superior solution hence why I use it.

Phew, I wasn’t dreaming. For once.

If I want to stock-up on a back-up system, David, what’s the approved route for finding a DL3A such as you mention ?

The DL3A was only fitted to US export LHD S1.5 cars but also used on other British cars whose electrical engineers were obviously way brighter than those at Jaguar.

Although that one is not exactly the same version as Jaguar used so may require modification to mount.

Vanity usually gets the better of me, but I appear to have been uncharacteristically backward in coming forward over this vital finishing touch.

Exasperated by the Sh-1t quality and fit of the C2796 bits people wanted to sell me, I got some stainless strip, a drill, a few bits of wood, and the fly-press.











If you want fifty of them I might need to tool up differently
