re enamelling exhaust manifolds
#41 Re: re enamelling exhaust manifolds
A bit bored, so I thought I'd give the manifolds a new coat of paint. I think they look even better now.

I'm interested about practical experiences members have with SNGB exhaust manifolds reproduction. They indeed seem to be glossy and faithful to the originals, but how resistant they are on the long run?

Yes, they are quite crazed.
I'm not sure whether that is due to inadequate/incorrect conditioning when first used or water getting on the manifolds when hot - rain entering the louvres under braking, or what.
I suspect the latter is a strong candidate as this can have happened on a number of occasions.

I’ve found here a satisfactory result with SNGB after 2,500 miles; perfect running-in, mostly highway driving and no driving in the rain, thought: https://forums.jag-lovers.com/t/experie ... /377254/55

I have just had my exhaust manifolds re-enamelled in high gloss black by Unimet Enamellers in Reading.

Had mine coated in the Jet-Hot coating mentioned previously. Some rain driving.
Dull black but has held up 20 years and still look the same as when coated.

Re the generally accepted view that rain and bonnet-louvres are at the origin of cracked enamel, I'm inclined to say I don't believe this.
Maybe Paydase could opine, as being amongst the more qualified amongst us ?
It seems to me that the feeble specific heat capacity of water, coupled with the quantities truly involved, and the huge temperature differences present, mean that raindrops will have zero impact on the integrity of the coating.
Close examination of pictures of the crazed surfaces show no increased crazing on the surfaces most exposed, and look more like Pete's idea of them being more of a reflection of heat-transfer in tight bends.
PS Please don't forget the Calyx silver tooth-paste option from Eastwood, via Frost.

Angus has some on test.
Angus ?
Mine's only done bench-running so far .............

One uses so little of it that it probably works out at below BBQ paint price, and the great thing for the moment is that it's much less prone to show scuffs, marks, discolourations.

That stuff looks pretty good. Wonder how long it lasts on rusty manifolds cleaned up in place? $22.00 +shipping here in the US. May give it a try on a couple other cars.

Jenks was known to say that any car with enamel still on the manifold reflected a driver who wasn’t driving the car positively enough. This from a man who regarded 4000 as a good cruise RPM and who regularly took them up to and over 5000

Calyx was also covered on an earlier thread (see http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php? ... yx#p133177)
I've been very pleased with Calyx thus far. You have to accept that your car will have gun metal coloured manifolds afterwards (which do have a nice sheen to them) but, given many E-Type owners have stainless steel manifolds on their car, I don't think that is a particularly great issue. Certainly better (IMHO) than faded BBQ paint.

#54 Re: re enamelling exhaust manifolds
I would like to bring up the topic of enamelled manifolds again to avoid having to open a new topic: Does anyone know up to which number of series 2 the manifolds were enamelled? Or was this only the case with series 1?
Thanks and greetings,
Klaus
