#1 Smiths Speedo Series 1 stopped working

Post by andrewh » Mon Apr 14, 2025 8:34 pm

I am frustrated! I had my speedo refurbished/renovated/serviced by a specialist and on completing the restoration of the car, the speedo soon failed. The speed registered ok, but the mileage counter stopped after about 120 miles. There was a clicking. I removed the unit and took it back to the chap and he said it was because of a sticking number wheel. So once more back in the car, and after 65 miles its failed again , but its the two functions now that are not working. The clicking noise was evident before failure again. I cannot now contact the chap and I am minded to have a look at this myself. My question is therefore, is that a mad idea, or are there any tutorials on how to repair these Smiths speedometers, and can parts be bought, assuming that it may need something?

Failing that , recommendations of who can do this work quickly and reasonably are welcome. Thank you in advance.

Get Speedograph Richfields in Nottingham to fix it.

Thank you both for your response. I have waded through the 6 videos of the chap repairing his speedo. Not sure whether he needed to take so long to explain a relatively simple exercise in his case. I am tempted to at least take the case off and see whether there is anything obvious wrong. If not it’s off to Speedograph Richfield. Thanks again.

I am willing to bet it’s either to do with the teeth on the plastic wheel or a spring that popped out…..😂

Sounds a fair bet. I hadn’t taken it out of the car yet but I will try to report back.
