#1 Bump stops

Post by alunwill » Wed Apr 30, 2025 8:11 am

I don't have the standard bump stop brackets fitted to the car and as I've decided to go with gaz rear shocks which come with stops fitted, is there a need or benefit to fit the jaguar bump stop brackets.

Feedback much appreciated.

You need bump stops which ever way you go. Original Girling/Boge shocks did not have bump stops so Jaguar fitted them to the body. Modern shocks have inbuilt bump stops, usually yellow and convoluted like the Michelin man, so no need for the stock Jaguar stops. The advantage of the new shocks is you get new bump stops every time you replace the shocks or you can just easily replace the bump stop.

None on my car. Hasn’t even got the brackets to fit them. They’d disappeared before my ownership, some 22 years and 85,000 miles ago. If they were that important…..

It has to be said, however, I’ve never driven my car hard. If I had, maybe I’d have discovered their function.

Not having bump stops can cause heavy metal on metal contact which in turn can destroy the shock absorber. Also, on the limit, such sudden contact can cause unpredictable handling. Easy to buy and fit the yellow style silicone buffers onto the shock piston.
