gearbox rebuilds
#1 gearbox rebuilds
evening all.
Having just come back from Silverstone I am now firmly of the belief that my gearbox needs a rebuild. Its the all syncro type but sounds so noisy.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to who to entrust this to plus an idea of costs
thanks
Tim

The only advice I can offer is to be sure you select a company who uses the correct specification synchro rings. Some of the after market versions are not hard enough and you will lose synchromesh after about 5,000 miles (in my case!). Unfortunately I have no further information about this as I gave up and installed a 5 speed box but it seems to be a known problem. Maybe others here know a bit more?

Hi Tim,
if i needed a manual gearbox rebuild i would use Neil at Allgears,Worksop,Nottinghamshire, not just because he's fairly local to me, M C Wilkinson used to use him to modify and rebuild their Getrags among other things.

just give him a call- 01909 478581

#7 Re: gearbox rebuilds
Tim, have you tried changing the oil and adding an additive first?

Thanks for the reply
The noise from the input shaft bearing has to heard to be believed plus the poor synchromesh makes me think its a 'box out job.
ive got a spare box so thats not an issue - plus i'll do the clutch at the same time

Hi Tim,
If you are talking about Ken Evans at Klassik Transmissions in Wolverhampton, I used him back in 2007 for a S2 gearbox rebuild. Certainly fixed an unpleasant knocking noise I had. He got the job done when he said and it is still going strong 3 years later. Don't expect church-like silence when it's done though - it still has reclaimed gears in it!
