#1 how to remove and save door skins on 1962 FHC?

Post by MikeE » Tue Jan 20, 2026 6:00 pm

In preparing the doors ready to send to the blasters I decided it would be wise to remove the skins, for refitment later, to allow the blaster to get to everything in the door frame and the seam areas.

So I made myself a skin remover tool, drilled out all the spot welds on the bottom and both sides of the door and have now separated the skins from the bottom, and left and right edges.

But how do I separate the skin at the top of the door, remembering that I want to reuse them after blasting and repair so can’t butcher them to free them from the frame?

Mike, have a look at Monocoque’s website, here’s one page with some photos that might help:

Also, go on the forum restoration section and search for “door*” (the star will allow for it being plural) as others will surely have been there. Those who have already done their projects may not visit the forum much so it’ll be best to search for their reports than hoping they’ll see your request and respond to you.

Thanks Geoff

I’ve scoured this forum and the internet for a couple of evenings but can’t find anything that explains how the skin is connected at the top of the door. But I have just found some photos of a reskinning exercise and I can see the shape of the panel prior to fixing which is helpful. I assume it’s just a couple of spot welds then lead loading which is obscuring the join, which is making it difficult for me to see where to attempt to separate.

On a positive note I’m glad I took the skin off as there is rust in the seams, which I’ll be able to sort properly one the skins full removed
