#1 Not a dizzy anymore

Post by lowact » Sat Sep 14, 2019 12:19 pm

Here is pic of my stripped down repurposed Opus disributor, alongside an original for size comparison. Is now a cam angle sensor, comprsing 2.5" 36-1 trigger-wheel and Honeywell SNDH-H3P-G01 sensor, for fully sequential efi & direct fire ignition. Haven't tried it yet, the lairy green cap is the 3d printed plastic prototype, final, will be aluminium, either CNC machined or 3d printed.

Is as compact as possible to leave plenty of room for ignition coils on each spark plug.

The coils are GM spec 19005218, 40kV, built-in drivers, they fit very tidily between the injectors.

Looking at your picture of the coils, I can't tell if you are using the original heads with slanted spark plugs or the later heads with the straight spark plugs. I had thought of using GM coils similar to yours but they didn't seem to be able to deal with the slanted plugs. Just wondering how you dealt with the actual connection to the plug. Kinda hard to see in that pic.

Currently I'm using 2 of the 6 pack coils as in the last Denso equipped V12s with a couple of Mitsubishi ignitors.

Coils connect via short "pigtail" HT leads. With flat heads (slanted sparkplugs), these HT leads would need to to be a bit different; to have 90-degree boots for the sparkplugs, i.e.:

My ECU has 12 ignition outputs so is able to fire each coil directly.
Meanwhile the "not a dizzy" now has its funky retro style aluminium top ...

I'm assuming that you had those holding brackets 3D printed?

Yep. Those were early version, concept prototypes. Very happy with the finals:
