Recent work on an S2 4.2 litre long stud engine has given me the chance to weigh individual parts for those who might be interested:
Block including studs … 79.4 kg
Pistons and con rods including bearing shells… 10.2 kg
Crank including bearing shells … 38.5 kg (crank is 31.4 kg)
Head including cams and covers … 36.2 kg
Sump including baffles … 8.8 kg
Flywheel (standard) … 12.6 kg
Clutch (9.5” complete) … 9.2 kg
Bellhousing … 5.4 kg
Gearbox (KE series all synchro) 38.3 kg
All in all total is 241 kg.
Quiz night question: will a 3.8 be heavier or lighter? Possibly heavier as the 4.2 had more metal taken away to give larger bores? Is the 10” clutch heavier? Short stud vs long stud, what’s taken away with longer holes for the studs is made up for by weight of longer studs?
Not included a few items like water pump, oil filter and still to weigh exhaust and inlet manifolds plus carbs. Also not every last nut, bolt, bracket, etc. But that should give a useful guide.
