#1 ALTERNATOR ANYONE?

Post by Stevemorris » Thu Jun 04, 2026 2:58 pm

OK, I think I have finally found the bottom of the pit...

The initial issue was with the Ignition/Oil pressure warning light. It comes on but only for a split second, then goes off even before I've hit the starter button! The car is showing charging on the ammeter, and with a multimeter across the battery it's definitely charging.

So, what's the problem? I hear you ask...

Well,,,,,

My car is a 65 FHC and as such the ignition warning light should in fact be an oil pressure light, but there is no switch in the block, and behind the rev counter is a 3AW warning light canister, with some home made wiring to it. The car has, at some point, been converted to the 3AW warning light system, but it doesn't work.....

So, I found the extra wire for the oil switch (someone had put both, sender and switch wire, on the 2 terminals on the oil pressure sender!) This wasn't an issue as I traced the other end of the wire to behind the speedometer, which had been cut off to accommodate the wire for the 3AW canister.

Attached is an image or two of the offending objects. The 3AW canister looks as though its wired correctly, an earth wire (which is now attached to a proper ground... ), a fused supply (white) and an ALT wire (blue) which ends up at the alternator of course. Now I do get how this works, the warning light bulb is grounded by the alternator when stationary, and as soon as it starts spinning the ground is broken, and the light goes out, simple.

But as you can see from the photo, the blue ALT wire is actually piggybacked onto a red wire that goes to a separate terminal stand alone on the back of the alternator?

My if I disconnect that wire the car doesn't charge.....

My thoughts are that for whatever reason someone has switched this to a 3AW W/L set up, and either fitted a different alternator or wired it incorrectly?

HELP PLEASE!!!!

Steve.

Steve, would fitting a self regulating alternator be an easier fix

Don’t understand the relevance of showing the water temperature sensor in photo 4?

Are you calling this the oil pressure sender?

Hi Steve..easiest way to sort this is to get a diagram for your alternator model....this will show what the connections are..and work from there...or as Geoff mentions a self regulating alternator would be an upgrade..Steve

I’ve heard of single wire alternators, 3 wire alternators but how many wires on this one? I’m having mind madness counting them ?

If it were me I’d strip that lot out and start again. The suggestion of an alternator with a built in regulator is a good start/ idea.

No its the wires that I have pulled up from the oil filter area that I'm interested in...

Thanks Geoff!

I did consider changing to a newer style, the 3AW/4TR system is pretty outdated I suppose...

I do like the idea of going back to basics regarding my car and the sign light being actually an OP light though, and I guess with this modern alternator approach I can do that!

I think now I have found some info in the wire positions on the back of my alternator I will attempt to get this one working as it should first, by re wiring the connections and dumping the 3AW canister, Ill let you know mate.

Again thanks for the sound advice Tim.

The alternator set up (according to the wiring diagram) has 4 wires with the 3AW set up, the 4th wire I would suggest literally just grounds the bulb circuit until the alternator spins up?

Ill see if I can tidy things up a bit then if I can get it working correctly ill see how it goes, first sign of alternator failure and I modern one is going on!

Best regards,

Steve.

So just to confirm chaps, when my car left the factory it DID NOT have a 3AW Canister? The wiring diagram kind of suggests it's either or??

Thanks chaps,

Best regards,

Steve.

Hi Ian, Thanks for confirming this!

Can I ask a favour? could you take a photo of the back of the alternator and the wires out of the 4TR Regulator please and either PM me them or post here? Mine should be the same as yours and hopefully soon will be!

Thanks again Ian,

Steve.
