#1 oil sump draining before working on oil return???
Just so I don't end up covered in oil while I'm working on it!
Is it necessary to drain the sump before removing the oil pump return line? I have a major leak where the elbow connects to the sump.

If you have access to a car lift, no, it is not necessary. If you place just the front wheels on the lift and raise it, the car (and engine) will end up at an extreme angle and the oil level will clear the return pipe.
I replaced mine this way.

The rope seal requires the crank to be turning to be effective, so with this much oil sitting over it, it will almost certainly start dripping. So, unfortunately, not a good way to see if it leaks.

I was thinking more of the sump gasket, not the rope seal one.

While you may have lived to tell the tale, I would highly recommend not loading a car lift (especially a two post) in such an asymmetric manner. The angle required to prevent oil egress would be extreme, and in my view extremely dangerous.
So much safer to just drain the oil. And if you're cheap, drain the oil into a clean container and re-use it.

Totally agree with Steve in above comment just drain the oil and don't risk having an accident.
