#1 5 speed gearbox

Post by Johnelliot63 » Sun Sep 06, 2026 3:24 pm

I am converting my car from an auto to a five speed manual. The options seem to be a Tremec or Toyota box. I have driven a car with a Tremec box and although the changes are good it feels a little notchy and not quite in line with the character of the car. Does anyone have experience with the Toyota box and even better with both boxes and is the Toyota more in keeping with the original four speed manual box?

The Tremec box should be very smooth in operation. If it's feeling notchy, it may be knackered or simply due to incorrect fluid.

The correct fluid for a Tremec 5-speed gearbox (like the T-5, TKO, or TKX) is Tremec HP-MTF, or a high-quality Dexron III/Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.

A lot of people get this wrong (including me when I tried RedLine MTL in my T-5) thinking a 'gearbox is a gearbox'. But the synchros in the Tremec need the correct fluid to work correctly.
