#1 Correct Jack

Post by eTypeG » Wed Nov 16, 2011 10:33 am

Sorry I know this has been covered before, however I can't view the pictures of the original posts. Is the following a correct jack for a Series 1 1965 FHC.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190600424146? ... 1423.l2649

Does anybody have pictures of the correct jack and handle please.

All the best

Gurdav

Well, I am not an expert on jacks, but it does look correct to me with the rectangular top which engages with the jacking point. It does, however, seem very expensive

These jacks are eye wateringly expensive. Ask the seller what the date stamp is on the jack. As Chris says, it looks to be the correct one.

Many thanks for the replies, you are not wrong these jacks do cost a bit especially for something that will not want to used !!!. I checked the JCNA Series 1 E-type judge's guide document and it describes the jack for FHC's after chassis numbers 886246 (LHD) and 860660 (RHD) as integral handle - cantilever - gray. Does that mean the jack should have a fixed handle i.e non detachable ?

My car, from April '65, has the integral handle...it's the grey one, with the blue one being for the S3. Both are original and unrestored.

They both work well on the car!

OK, so I'll ask the question again. What year is stamped into the jack?

Grudav,

I have the same type of jack shown in your link, and can confirm it works fine. I bought it at Beaulieu a couple of years ago for about ?65 IIRC.

I do not think, however, it is exactly correct for a S1 E Type. For reasons I cannot recall, I believe the original jack wound down a bit more than shown, so the saddle carrying the lifting socket sits flat on the spreader foot, rather than standing up an inch or two as shown in the link and as mine does.

As I say, it still works fine, and fits in the wheel well, but might not be truly original. I have seen genuine jacks on eBay for ?250 and more.

I stand to be corrected,

Rob

I am not sure at all, there seems to be many versions of eType jacks around, however the one in my link looks like Mark's photo and as shown the the S1 4.2 parts manual incuding the twist in the handle, etc.

The diagram post above on the left is the one I found in the 4.2 Series 1 parts book, it has the twisted intergral handle (second link I posted), however I have found similiar looking jacks (first link I posted) but with a detached handle. Both these jacks are marked as Malifacture (I believe), I think the detached handle one maybe for Series 2's ???.

It appears the S2 2+2 had a different jack to the FHC/OTS and the C20661 jack was specified as having a separate handle - C27873.

All long wheelbase E-types have a different jack. Using a mis-matched jack would be dangerous whichever way round the swap occurred.

The LWB cars use four jacking points like the XJ models, with a bobbin behind each front wheel and ahead of each back one. These locate positively into the hole at the lifting end of the jack type shown in the blue S3 photo. This does noyt locate securely to the SWB jacking points and nor do the LWB nipples with the SWB jacks.

The very early S1s used a screw-type bottle jack.

The jack has no date stamp, as I contacted the seller out of curiosity.....does that mean it is a repro ?

Jonathan

I suspect we are looking for the 'correct' jack but for anyone just interested in changing the wheel it's easy to convert the incorrect one.....

Jonathan, I can't see any date stamp on my jack either, and I don't think it's a repro!
