#1 Mudshield Rubber Seal

Post by Series 1 » Wed Apr 18, 2012 6:00 pm

The rubber seals on top of the front wheel mudshields weren't on my car before I rebuilt it and I can't find a decent reference picture. The offside seal is quite long and I figured that to fit it without cutting would provide the most watertight protection. My effort doesn't look right to me and with the bonnet closed doesn't completely seal the top of the mudshield with the bonnet underside. Either I've fitted it wrong (most likely) or they're not that good in the first place. Personally, I think they look like a bit of a design afterthought anyway but I'll go for anything that keeps the muck out!

Shall I leave them or get the stanley knife to that crease? (or start again?)

Thanks

Angus

It is probably about as good as you will get. Once the bonnet has been clamped down on it for a while it will ease itself into shape helped by engine heat.

David,

That's what I thought, it just looks like a bit of old hovercraft. Oh well, thanks for the reply.

I bought a sheet of neoprene 1/8" thick and used the original as a template and cut round it.
The original is shaped like a boomerang and if you cut the new out of the sheet like that then you won't get the crease.
RS Components sell the neoprene I think.

Dave, that might explain it. I bought the rubber from one of the usual suppliers and it was a straight rectangular strip of rubber. No curve at all. I'll make a template up from the mud shield itself and buy some neoprene. Thanks very much.

Angus:
Until I saw your picture I never knew why the air trumpet assembly has that "nick" out of the bottom - looks like its there to clear the pedal assembly on the right-hookers.

Glad the photo helped. I must get around to putting the air box back on. I've lost count of the times I've taken it off recently.
