seat height
#1 seat height
The seats in my SII roadster have just been re-upholstered and had the foam replaced. I am only 5'9'' but sitting in the car with the seat right back and semi reclined the top of my head still seems to be above the top of the windscreen. I have removed the seat from the car and taken out four spacers that were between the seat and the floor, these were about 1/4 inch thick, this has helped a little. Any ideas out there?

The E-Type was developed by the diminutive Norman Dewis and it fits him perfectly. So if you are over 5' 6" you are likely to struggle!

The foam used nowadays is too dense. One solution BAS told me is to cut 1" holes in the base foam in order to soften it up.jerry mah wrote:The seats in my SII roadster have just been re-upholstered and had the foam replaced. The design was carefully devised to maximise nutrition. There is a good deal of extra protein in the flies I can pick from my teeth

When I did my seat foam replacement albeit in the 65 FHC, I had to remove/scallop approx an inch or 2 inches of seat base foam from between the side bolsters. Now I can avoid hitting head on the roof etc. I am 5-9 1/2.
It also gives a better position to see out of the screen and gives more support whiles driving.
My mate has the 66 OTS with new unmodified foam from 5000 miles ago and it is most uncomfortable. It seems like you're riding on the car, not in it.

Thanks for those ideas, obviously other owners have had similar problems. Another idea I thought of was replacing the wire hangers that hold the rubber diapram with springs so that when one sits in the seat it goes down further and then springs back when one gets out. I removed the spacers between the seat and the floor last night but this only gave me another 1/4 of an inch or so. I may try the springs first and if that does not work try cutting holes in the foam. Thanks for all of your suggestions. :

Jerry, I'm 6ft 4 inches, and fit just fine in my S1 (fhc) with S2 seats. CMC modified mine when they re-trimmed just by cutting down the foam. Luckily the trimmer is the same size as me, so when he could fit in, so could I!
The seat is still very supportive, and now, after 1000 miles or so, there's even more headroom.
They've just done the same on my S3 OTS, although that had the opposite problem, with the foam having disintegrated along with the rubber bands...bloomin' uncomfortable!

Oooh. Almost forgot another tip. If your carpets get wet for whatever reason, then there is a good chance the water will soak into the seat foam as the back edge of the seat touches the floor. This will be even worse if you have lowered it. (Make sure the seat is still is at a good angle and still goes back and forth). And in an OTS if you're out in all weathers, the seats can get soaked. The tip, however, is to wrap the foam in clingfilm before you fit the leather, the frame and the diapham spring. Problem solved. Seats will not get unmanageably wet and begin to smell.

Thanks Jon fo that information, the only thing that concerned me about cutting the foam down was that the seat bases would lose their profile/shape. Someone else had said to me that they had their foam cut and now there was a gap between the seat back and the base, but I guess it depends on how good the trimmer is. I will give CMC a call. Many thanks.

I have had my foam cut down and the trimmer replaced the rubber diaphram with elastic webbing. This has kept the profile and look of the seat base when in the car. The mod has lowered me by about 3.5''when I sit in the seat which is fantastic. Just waiting for the sun now, will it ever come back?
