#1 ID Numbers

Post by paulallyedwards » Thu May 10, 2012 5:35 pm

The ID plate is missing on my 1971 S2 2+2. I am looking to replace it. Where can I find:-

1. The car number
2. The Gear Box number (can it be seen from the engine bay)?

Suggestions gratefully received.

Body number is on a tag riveted in the rear number plate recess or, on later S3 cars, on the front bulkhead. If the car has been accident repaired it is not unusual to find the number tag missing. The body number is sometimes written in crayon on the body shell behind various bits of trim. It may be behind the rear wheel arch near the fuel pump but some cars do not have it there. Gearbox number is on top of the gearbox stamped into the cover so you need to take out the centre console.

David has dealt with the body number. The chassis number can be in a number of places. The most usual is on the upper horizontal surface of the right hand "wing" of the picture frame, just above the front damper mounting. However, many accident damaged cars have lost their original frame. Sometimes, you may find it on a tag riveted to the shell and concealed by the rear number plate. Occasionally in FHCs it is riveted to the left hand rear inner wheel arch - very helpfully concealed by trim!

Hi Paul,

If your car is a 1971 2+2, the likelihood is that it is a Series 3 car, which had the chassis number on the left hand sloping face of the front bulkhead, underneath and slightly inboard of the heater unit.

Bit of a mix-up there Christopher? You are describing the body tag not the car number. The latter is only on the ID plate and picture frame, or stamped into the front bulkhead on S3.

The picture frame is the rectangular front member of the engine and suspension frames which ties the side frames together. As I mentioned in my earlier post, the chassis number , if it is on it at all, will be stamped into the upper right damper mounting on the top horizontal surface

Hi Paul,

Given the thrust of your questions, I am assuming you have a late Series 2 car, just in case, however, let me point out that Series 3 cars have a slightly different "picture frame" which is not rectangular at all. Rather, it is a form of flattened "V", as it is open at the top to cram the engine into the bay. As said elsewhere, there will be no ID numbers on this item.

It is also possible, as Chris mentioned, that the picture frame on your car is actually not the original. Being a Series 3 man, I am not up to speed on many of the features and and availability of parts for the earlier cars, but I do know that the E-type Series 1 and 2 cars sometimes had the picture frame replaced due to rust or even accident damage. The parts used might be new and unstamped, or even from another car and thus with the wrong number on them.

The chances are relatively slim, but it is possible. Before you stamp up the new plate, probably best to confirm all the details with JDHT or similar.

Thank you all,

Unfortunately, my efforts to find the car number have come to nill, and I can't see the gear box serial number down the hole under the gear stick, so I will try the Jaguar Heritage Trust and see if their on line records can help.

many thanks to you all for your kind assistance

You will usually find the body number written in crayon underneath the hatch lower tail gate panel. You will have to remove the trim panel.

#12 Unusual Place for Body Number?

Post by Dawnpatrol » Wed Feb 27, 2013 12:47 pm

Hi Chaps,
I'm just dismantling the front frames from my March 65 car and came across the body number written in yellow crayon under where the n/s engine mount bolts to the frame. It would have been partially visible with the mount attached but for the many years of oily muck but only noticed some writing when the mount was removed. No 4E prefix just the numbers.
I've never heard of this location before, anybody else seen this?
I'm reasonably pleased they are the original frames; time will tell if they are usable, it has been in dry storage for at least 25 -30 years to my knowledge as it was another one of my late dad's acquisitions.

Michael
