Having had a passenger toeboard made my wife now says it is not a complete success because as soon as you put any weight on it the thing twists as it is only supported on one side (transmission tunnel). So the passenger is sitting with the left leg deeper into the footwell than the right. I have tried putting a piece of wood on it with limited success. I then found this:
It was made by someone who worked in the factory E-Type upholstery shop in the '60's and whilst I have no idea if this was a genuine Jaguar modification it is a perfect fit in the footwell and totally eliminates unwanted movement. I have copied the support and you can find a template here:

Just print it out to A4 paper and it will be the correct size. I was thinking of making it hinged on one side with a clip so it will be easier to store when not in use

Not sure I follow. If correctly shaped and installed it isn't supported at the side (or I don't remember it being so). The top edge rests against the top of the footwell closing panel, which is even all the way across from left to right. The bottom edge is supported by the edges of the footwell where a notch rests on each side and the 'tongue' of the board at the bottom pokes down into the foowell itself. By being supported the whole way across from left to right at the top, and at each side widely spaced left and right at the base, I'm not sure where any rocking side to side would come from? Yes, thicker trim and crumpled floor mats do let it shuffle around slightly but twisting or support on only one side sounds like a misfit toe board?
Still, whatever works works, I suppose. As long as she's comfortable!

It is supported (let's stick to RHD) by a vertical part of the transmission tunnel on the right side and is then 'wedged' in place against the floor, the dash and the left hand body panel. All looks good and feels firm when you push down on it with your hand. When you have your feet on it movement of the car and the person tends to allow some slippage on three of the four 'attachment' points. After a few miles the board is no longer level. I mentioned this to Angus and he sent me a picture of his fix after his wife complained:

The modification I found is so well executed (the board leans in at a 4 degree angle for instance) and shaped that I cannot think it was done as a simple one off project. I can understand why it may not have been popular however because when not in use it takes up considerable room especially in the OTS. The work was done by GB Classic Trim in Nuneaton

So your theory is fine Pete but two wives and an independent company think there is a problem, and this looks like a very well crafted solution.

Fine. If it works it works - can't knock that. Both your wives are quite petite and so is mine. I suppose you guys just couldn't match my svelte 16 stone stomping it into the footwell beforehand. Good thing too. :-)

Just remembered this photo from our 'Factory Fit' thread. It is from a totally original un-restored 4.2 OTS:

I always assumed the toe board was pictured being supported by the hood bag but now I realise it is self supporting. Suggests the vertical support was done at the factory after all!
