A couple of questions.....
#1 A couple of questions.....
First off. Can somebody point me in the right direction for supplier of correct sized and type faced sticky front plate, UK spec and also a correct silver peak rear plate? Edit. Can the rear plate be successfully stuck on or will the rubber grommets in the rear panel render this impossible?
Also the bonnet catches on the bulkhead wall are set with the bonnet fitting perfectly far in thereby exposing an unsightly slot which the female bracket slides within. Is this normal and if so are there any fixes? I have new bonnet male brackets which could of course be slightly too wide meaning that the female has to slide right over. Any help much appreciated. Thx

For registration plates try Tippers and/or Frampton's - contact details in our 'Knowledege Base'. If your car is pre 1963 you need the 3 1/2" characters although I don't think you can get that size on the front stick-on, but certainly for the rear. Be prepared to pay ~ ?140 for the rear plate alone because they rely on NOS as no more are being made and you may find they have run out of certain characters. I just bought a set from Frampton's - Ace polished silver peak for the rear and silver on black for the front. Avoid the white on black if your car is Opalescent IMHO.

Thanks very much. I have used both of these suppliers in the past but wanted to check that the plates will be right. I would hate it if the rear didn't fit correctly and the fron was not correct.
Just the bonnet catch issue then....well for today at least. Spent 4 hours making a set of number plate lights fit correctly. This is going to take a while with some pattern parts to accommodate. Rear reverse light shroud is just the wrong shape to fit the floor profile snugly. Ah trials and tribulations.

As regards the (rear) plate size simply measure what you want it to be and they will make it accordingly.

Now I have a conundrum. Polished or not polished! Did you guys template the rear panel for the plate manufacturers?

I used Tippers for the OTS but be aware they have limited supplies of unpolished Ace characters as they are no longer produced. I ordered a set of ACE polished from Frampton's last week for my FHC and they should be here tomorrow. I will take photos of the side by side so you can judge the difference. Both companies will make up custom back plates so just measure the space to the nearest 1/8" and specify it as part of your order. You will also need to specify flat plates not the shouldered type. If your car is pre 1963 you can have the large 3 1/2" characters, post that they are 3 1/8". As far as I am aware the characters for the front stick on plate are only available in 3 1/8" which is OK as the larger ones tend to dominate the look of the bonnet. Certainly for an Opalescent car avoid the white characters on the front and insist on the silver.

Having thought about this all day I am going to go for unpolished if they are available.
Will call tomorrow. I have on my DB5 which are the originals. That said they are not aluminium. Picture to follow if interested.

Argh - Eagle Eye Pete! Yes I bought 3.8 FHC # 860294 which I managed to convince the wife was an "investment". Took her to see it and she liked the colour combination (Opalescent Dark Blue/grey interior) so that was half the battle. She still has not been it it and has not exactly thrown sugar at it. This one will remain faithful to original spec unlike the OTS hot-rod, so two completely different rides (which is how I justified it to myself). It has full heritage back to the first and subsequent owners (buff log books) and has done 82,000 documented miles. It is fascinating to look back through the history if only to see how the SNG invoices have changed over the years:

And in 1975 you could get a discount for a new bonnet at the Jaguar main dealer:

Last time it was up for sale in August 1993:

Excellent. Yes, if they like the colour scheme things are a lot easier! Nice counterpoint to the 4.2 OTS and good to keep original spec. Same sort of time as my 885958, early 62 footwell car with straight rear bulkhead etc.
Enjoy the authentic 62 experience, warts and all. I already know I won't have any headroom unless I tip the seat back or use very soft foam. Regardless of what the market does from this high point, I wish you many happy miles of return on investment.

David - 3.8 FHC # 860294 - a very nice colour combination and a nice sounding car! Just to add to the number plate story - I had the same issue with Tippers - short of one of the Digits. Frampton have the 3 1/2 inch in the ACE letters but only come polished not natural, but as they are not laquered the polished alloy will dull down and would be my preference. These plates really set off the car as I remember them back in the day.

David,
Really interested in the colour combination of your newly acquired FHC, my 2+2 was originally dark blue with beige interior which IMO is a bit bland. I'm considering going for grey or blue interior during the restoration so any photos you can post would be greatly appreciated.
