It may be a cheaper route - I thought- to buy a rotten shell of an ots, and an S1 2+2 as well for all the techie parts.
And then, happy puzzling for the next 8 yrs....

Chop it out from where exactly David? It is a totally different floor and tunnel and rear bulkhead assembly. You can't just take out nine inches.Heuer wrote:If you are going down the OTS route you may as well chop out the extra 9" (the 2+2 floors are unobtainable anyway) and make it look like the real thing because 1E75004 does indeed look odd.
The doors and hinges and locks are totally different too so you can't just stick a set of SWB doors in either.
About the only way you could do it would be to throw away everything aft of the front bulkhead.

Hi,
Just my opinion. I agree the conversion to OTS is probably not the best route, but I would be the first to support you if you went that route - it's your car and you have every right to do what you want. That said, the Series 1 2+2 is quite rare and although that doesn't make any difference to value (they are seriously undervalued compared to other models), it would be nice to see this car relatively original again. I can't comment about the difficulty of straightening the bulkhead, it seems reasonable to me that with care and effort, the work can be done - by the way your jig is amazing and you obviously have a good idea what you are doing.
As a 2+2 home restorer myself (albeit the Series 3), I love the lines and think the car is worth saving as original, there are a number of roof clips out there - I considered one to replace my Webasto equipped roof, but decided against it thankfully - I love my Webasto. Although the lines are different due to the screen differences, the cars are still good looking. A few people have "spare" roofs, either because they were converting Webasto cars to non Webasto and in some cases, converting Series 3 2+2 to OTS cars. However, you may need to do some research to discover whether the later series cars have the same roof line - particularly at the leading edge adjacent to the screen, as the Series 1.
As to the comment that 2+2 floors are unobtainable, Martin Robey is still advertising them:

They were certainly available when I did my car, although I fabricated my own repair sections. They aren't actually that complicated, but I recommend contacting Robeys and others to find out if they are still available.
Like others, I suggest that some of the body shells advertised will be worth very serious consideration, many come with extra spares and I am sure you can make much of the money back in selling the extra spares, including those you already have. Even sections cut from the current shell may fetch surprising amounts.
Finally, as has often been said, Joe public will not care whether the car is FHC or 2+2 - it will be an E-type and they will love it - they almost all do!
Again, best of luck whatever you decide!
Regards,
Simon

Thanks for the kind comments Simon, really the whole question of the roof removal idea was only a vague idea...I happened to notice it just before I was finishing that day, got stuck in a huge traffic jam by the Dartford bridge and sat there in something of a panic!!
And, at present, its still nothing more than that....in fact I'm leaning towards keeping the roof....the passenger side door fits well enough...I've compounded and polished the roof (the only bit of reasonable paint on the car, albeit white) and can't see any damage...
I realise I'll have to do something but not quite sure exactly what as yet, as long as I can convince myself I won't need a new screen every time I go over a speed hump then the roof will most likely stay!
As to shortening the wheelbase I've no intention of going that route, from my point of view that would turn a doable project into something far too complex.
My thinking in regard to this whole idea of removing the roof was never to build a fake series 1 OTS but rather an open 2+2 build from a car that was otherwise likely to be scrapped and the two questions I had about this have been answered, ie. are there any bureaucratic/legal reasons not to do so?...it seems not; and what would it look like when finished?.... a bit of a pigs ear!
A bit dismayed that the floor pans aren't available David, I had seen them on, I think, the Martin Robey site, priced at around ?200, and just assumed there was no problem there.
I can make them if I have to but it would involve a lot of extra effort, I won't be needing them for 4 or 5 weeks so was wondering if theres any possibility that I might find some at Stoneleigh next month?
Again, my thanks for your comments, thoughts, suggestions...Rob

The link Simon has provided seems to suggest they are available once more so give Robey's a call to confirm. Sometimes vendors have them in their catalogue but actually getting them is a different matter!

All fine, I just spoke to them...and in stock! I tend to get easily distracted and had just spent a pleasant hour or two working out how to make a tool for pressing the indents in the floorpan....but buying them considerably easier...thanks!

Hi Rob,
I got loads and loads of parts at Stoneleigh, over the years I got a complete set of re-chromed original bumpers, door skins, battery trays and lots of other things as NOS or Second Hand. Unfortunately a lot of what used to go ther apparently now goes on ebay, because the returns can be greater and sellers don't have to wait. I think it would still be worth the visit - I went twice a year for 5 years until I moved. I also picked up lots of less common parts and books etc.
Martin Robey used to do a discount on parts they took there and sold for cash, including pre-ordered parts; so did many others. I bought sills, wiring looms, heater box, sill closers, bonnet inner panels, rear arches and lots of other stuff from Robey and Autosparks among others - give them a ring and ask/order before going. I saved up cash all winter for the spring trip, and all Summer for the Autumn event!
Be careful with some items, I bought radius arm bushes that fell apart before the car moved, so had to go to SNG, but it is generally obvious what is good and what isn't. I even dragged exchange items there and new ones back (brake calipers and Alternators for example.) SNG usually email to customers that they will do a discount on pre-order parts picked up at the show - you need to register your details, I still get emails, even though there is no way can go there!
I was on a budget, so saved wherever I could - another tip, check the specialists before paying the prices on ebay - not everything is cheaper there. Oh yes, joining the E-type club gets you discount at SNG and others and on a major project easily pays for itself.
Regards,
Simon

I went to see the V12 in Southend mentioned earlier here and as people have said quite rightly it looked just a bit wrong....so the roof stays on mine I think!
It was being sold on behalf of one of his customers by a chap who mainly deals in Porsches/Audis etc....had plainly had an awful lot of money spent on it...but had been there for a year with very little interest.
