#1 Dial Restoration

Post by neil4444 » Tue Sep 24, 2013 8:07 am

Hi,

I need to get all my dials serviced/restored as they're grubby, paint is peeling, rubbers perished, etc. I also need to get the clock hands repaired & the speedo recalibrated following diff change. From searching these pages it looks like Speedograph Richfield or Speedy Cables are the places to go. Please can anyone advise on personal experiences of either ?

Many thanks,

Neil

SR are good. Not a lot of humour or chat but do a good job for a good price.

Speedograph Richfield are good and share the same lack of humor or chat as SR

Thanks,

And just before I go ahead with getting dials restored, is there anything I need to do with the Rev Counter on my 62 3.8 OTS if I'm going the EDIS/Megajolt route ?

I've been reading some of the pages re electronic ignition and RVI vs RVC and tbh a little confused so any advice much appreciated.

Regards,

Neil

The S1's used a tach generator driven off the rear of the RH camshaft. This outputs 1v per 100rpm and the tachometer responds to the total voltage. It is entirely independent of the ignition system, unlike the S2 cars. About the only thing you may notice is the rev counter under-reading which is caused by the magnets in the generator weakening with age. No fix other than replacing the generator and the repro items are prone to early failure so look for a good s/h one off a Mk2, Mk10 or E-Type.

There was another way around the problem which was to convert the tacho to an electronic design: http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=292 Dave Rawle used to supply the boards but they have not been available for some time. The circuit diagram is there if you know anyone who can wield a soldering iron. Works brilliantly and makes the gauge highly accurate.

If you fit EDIS/Megajolt remember to set the soft rev cut-out at 5,500 rpm via your PC as a safe guard - never trust your tachometer unless you have checked it alongside a digital one running off the coil.
