#1 Front suspension mounting bolts help please

Post by andrewh » Sun Oct 06, 2013 8:59 am

I have done it again! My original strip down photos are not fit for purpose! So I am just putting all the front suspension back together and am having trouble with which size bolts go where. Mainly all around the front fulcrum mounting brackets and rack. There are a number of spacers, brake pipe tabs etc etc. I wonder whether anyone has a car at this stage of build that they would be kind enough to take some photos of or else its a mission up to our friends at E type UK for some serious photographing. I have seen the diagram in the resources section of this forum but its still not too clear for me which bolts/set screw goes where. Any help much appreciated. thanks A

I have just done this. The combination of https://dl.dropbox.com/u/8496016/subfra ... rdware.pdf
and the parts manual are all you need. The length of every bolt is in there.
No point in copying others' mistakes; go back to the original.

yes I have looked at these. For instance though, bolt " H" is not listed in the table, unless I am missing something? Do the bolts have washers under the heads or just under the nylocs? thanks for the reply

You also need this document: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/849 ... teners.pdf If you read the accompanying text in the Spares Catalogue it tells you where washers are used and in what order e.g.:

The Spares Catalogue uses the codes listed in the Jaguar Fasteners document and Steve's diagram and instructions give you orientation and other detail.

ummh......thanks, I have been through these but I suppose I was being a bit lazy and rather than tax my poor old head trying to work this all out I had hoped someone may have a photo or two. Basically, I have worked out the sequence from the parts book and Steves list which is marvellous but does conflict with what looks like the parts book says. I am sure it is me that is wrong, but as mentioned before, bolt "H" is not listed, so dont know what length that is, and I am not sure "C" is correct as it seems too long. I will sit down again, and take a bit more time over this. One final question. I have two set of roll bar brackets. Both are different, the new ones from SNG fit the holes on the front but overhang the spacer and cross frame so could be for the back, however, my replated brackets dont fit the holes on the subframe but dont overhand the side frame!!! I must have got these brackets muddled up with the E Type and they could be from something else, but no idea what as I have not stripped anything else down with antiroll bar brackets for a very long time!!

I think that H on Steve's list is the bottom bolt holding the fulcrum bracket mounting plate. In the parts manual it is UFB.131/17R ,that is a 5/16 x2 1/8 bolt which I think is the same as the bolts he calls E. I agree that working these bolts out is a little frustrating as they do not appear in the diagrams.

It is shown here http://www.projectetype.com/images/Steering_mount_R.jpg

and here http://www.projectetype.com/images/3.8_ ... _plate.jpg

On my 3.8 I have put flat washers under all of the frame bolt heads, and under the nyloc nuts, even if they are not listed in the parts manual. There is enough thread on the bolts to do this.

WRT the anti sway bar brackets, the front ones are cut diagonally top and bottom like this http://www.sngbarratt.com/ProductDetail ... 11ba353d32

The rear ones are chamfered on either side top and bottom.

Hey Andrew. Many thanks for the post and links. This exactly what I needed to help me forward. I must have been in such a hurry when pulling mine apart I didn't not take enough photos of the front end. I reckon the roll bar brackets I got back from the platters cannot be off my job!
Thanks once again.
