#1 A Hello and opinions sought....

Post by wokkadriver » Wed Oct 16, 2013 5:55 pm

Greetings to all - I have been looking into all things E for a while now with a view to ownership. Long story short, my father was a huge Jag fan and sadly passed away in August. He always loved the E type, but for various reasons never bought one, although had a number of XJSs and XK8/Rs which he loved, and I guess this has spurred me into action. I have had a number of interesting motors over the years, running from MGBs in my youth, through TVR, Jag and Aston Martin. I'm no stranger to the 'common sense' stuff to look for in a car, and have seen a few interesting motors on the 'net, hence my post for your thoughts...

I don't have millions to blow, and would rather have a useable motor than a car that looks brand new. I prefer the look of the S1 regarding the taillights, indicators etc and so budget and the extra space offered by a 2+2 like this one are appealing:

That said, I would prefer a FHC, and the various fettles that this one has had also make for an interesting car (although I'm not wholly sold on the wheels and the fact it has been changed quite a lot does raise an eyebrow...) The dealer has confirmed it has had S3 bodywork to accommodate the wider wheel track on the back, and the bonnet to match.

Welcome to the Forum!

Whatever you decide to do contact Angus Moss http://www.mossjaguar.com/ (he is a Moderator on the forum '1954etype') and get him to do an inspection on whatever car you are thinking about. Have you considered an S2 because they are the best developed and finding a rust free example is easier. I am sure Angus told me he had a S1.5 coming in.

Oh - and please don't take this the wrong way but I think I will add that S2+3 car to our Collectors Corner forum. Suggest you give it a wide berth as it will be a pig to drive! Actually it is just down the road from me in Colston Bassett, the home of good Silton and odd E-Type's.

Thank you for the welcome - I had a funny feeling that the advice on the S2/3 may be along those lines!

I will definitely bear Angus in mind, he certainly seems to be both a busy and knowledgeable chap!

Hi,

So which Squadron, Wokkadriver - 18, 27 or 7?

Spent some time on 18 a few years back; you broke 'em - we fixed 'em!

Welcome to the forum and good luck in the search. I have to doubt the value of that "hybrid" car; E-type owners are mostly a particular bunch and most people seek originality. You don't see many "custom" E-types and the tendency these days is to restore to original condition which gets expensive when things have been physically altered. On the other hand, if you like it, don't let anyone put you off, but be very sure you can live with the modifications.

Have a seat in all types of E-type if you can before deciding, FHCs can be cramped for many unless you drive with seats half way reclined or modify mountings etc. Early Series 1 seats don't work for everyone whilst 2+2 cars are still the underated cheaper option and I have always found they look far better in the metal than in photos. They are spacious and you will have some cash to spare for some of the better modifications which make the car more enjoyable.

I love my V12 FHC (they were not officially called 2+2s by then), though the rear seats have not been used in my ownership. Fuel costs are higher, but not unduly so given the car is for fun and not daily use.

Best of luck,

Simon

The red car looks quite nice ( but then nearly all E types do look good in photos , so it is no real guide ) and definitely worth a look . The only thing about it that worries me is the tailgate fit but this may just be a matter of adjustment

As for the black car ? Bargepoles come to mind
