Hello I am Maikel from Germany, infected by the E Type Virus since I was a boy 6 years of age. I am onwing one S1 1E30264 you all know where to look it up. These days I have bought via Ebay a strange S1 or is it as S1.25? It is 1E77070 built on 10 January 1967. Open headlights. However I have two issues.

1. The car is in Ayr, near Glasgow and I have to transport it to Germany.
Could someone forward it for me from Glasgow to Coventry or London? Does anybody has an idea or possibility to help me?

2. Has the bonnet be replaced? Should January 67 not still have the covered headlights? xkedata.com 1E77010

Look forward hearing from you.

Maikel

Hi Maikel,

Welcome to the forum.

If it was me I'd be looking to get a company to haul it for me, e.g.
http://www.transcars.com/
http://www.carseurope.net/
I've not used them and I have no idea of costs. All I know is it cost me ?500 10 years ago to haul my car from one side of UK to the other.

Regarding the bonnet on your car, I understand from Haddock's guide that the closed headlights were phased out in July 1967, however, I'm not sure if this is based on Date of Manufacture or Date of Registration and not sure what your January date refers to either ? I believe there were a number of other changes (e.g. dashboard) at the same time as introduction of the open lights so this may give further clues as to whether your car is a series 1, 1.25 or 1.5. I suggest looking at Haddock's Guide, else I'm sure someone on this forum will know.

Regards,

Neil

Posting your haulage job on www.shiply.com might also be an option. I've never found them particularly good value for smaller items but might work well for something like a car.

Maikel,

If you look at XKEdata and you select the 35 cars before and the 35 after yours, it seems that you must have one of the first with uncovered headlights. Most cars on XKE data after yours are with uncovered head lights. I know there may have been a lot of modifications over the years, but these are most likely from uncovered to covered then the other way around.

#7 Headlight change which day which car?

Post by Maikel » Wed Nov 20, 2013 8:49 am

Yes you are right, but I thought the change started in July 67. But I think you are right. The car is 1E77010 it was build on the 10th. And when you look at the 1E34113 also build on the 10th 67 it is exactly the same. But, question is, what type of bonnet is it? Is it the normal one for covered headlights or is it a completely different one, exclusively for these headlights? And why do have some of the later models still covered headlights?

Try reading this as it will tell you everything about the S1.25 and S1.5: JCNA S1.5 Judge's Guide: http://www.jcna.com/library/concours/2006/e-type1.5.pdf

I have had this document, but compared with the cars shown on xkedata.com arround the production date 10. January 1967 I can see later models with covered head light? It that due to the fact that a car was produced and got the VIN later? Then I could understand that a later model which has started production prior to the 10th of January but finished much later has the covered headlights. And then still one remaining question. What bonnet shape is it? For me it seems the S1 but are the light whole are completely different?

Thanks
Maikel

The JCNA document should be your Bible. The cars on XKEdata have not been validated - anyone can put up the information - and need to be treated with a degree of caution. Over the years bonnets could have been swapped and owners become confused over build date, dispatch date, registration date and title date. JCNA have pulled together information from official sources, research by Porter, Haddock and others plus their own detailed examination of cars over many years. If it is not in the JCNA guide then consider it to be wrong unless you can prove categorically any variance was done at the Factory. JCNA says:

"The Series 1.25s were identical with the late Series 1s except for one item ? the bonnet! This bonnet featured open headlights for the first time on an E-type. All other component areas, including the interior and engine compartment were identical to the late Series 1s. To reiterate, the Series 1.25 had the same 4.2 XK engine with three SU carburetors, polished aluminum cam covers, and single radiator fan as the late Series 1s, they also had the same toggle switches on the center dash as the Series 1?s. The identity problem is compounded by the bonnet, the predominate exterior feature, being identical to the Series 1.5s, only by examining the engine compartment and center dash (or the chassis numbers) can one determine whether the subject is a Series 1.25 or a Series 1.5. The Series 1 Judge?s Guide by Bob Stevenson should be used for the Series 1.25 E-types. "

So the S1.25 (not an official series number) is an S1 with a S1.5 (also not an official series number) bonnet.

Howwwwww.....
that means if I have to replace the bonnet which item of which catalogue I have to choose? From the pictures of those 1.25 cars it seems to me that the air intake is similar to the S1 and. Do the S1.25 and S1.5 do have their own parts catalogue and is it the same item no? It is a one and only intermediate bonnet between the S1 and S2. Covering both 1.25 and 1.5 models? I am right? To be honest I have never ever heard ore read about an S1.25 model until now.

The bonnet is a S1 modified to take open headlamps. Same indicators/side lights as the S1, same bumpers, same badge bar, same mouth, same bonnet balance links etc. The modification involves trimming the headlight bonnet flange to allow the S1.5 sugar scoops to fit. These sit on top of the opening and are riveted in place. The chrome trim attaches to small catches held in place by the rivets. You would also need new headlamp diaphragms (#BD36577 and #BD28461 which I think are the same as the S2) as they set the headlamps further forward. Easy to convert an S1 bonnet to S1.5 spec with a bit of cutting and new diaphragms, going the other way you need to do a bit of welding and need S1 diaphragms #BD16422 and #BD16433. I don't think you can buy a S1.5 specific bonnet though.

#14 Transport

Post by Thor » Wed Nov 20, 2013 7:10 pm

Maikel
I live near Ayr and spoke to a local car transport guy today he thinks your best way of moving your car would be to use the large transport firms who specialise in auctions.

The only problem you might encounter would be if the car did not drive onto the transporter they would have to use a truck with winch facilities (??? extra).

Thor.
