Frank : I don't want to discourage you, but all you can sell it as at the moment is as a project car . The external paint job looks alright although I notice that the inside bonnet catches have been sprayed and the spraying of the interior looks poor, if it's been done at all. The interior trim looks fairly good but not pristine and until reinstalled it is difficult to assess it . The chrome looks rather dull and if not redone will detract from the paint job. If you reassemble it, then I would think you could reasonably rely on clearing 15K and with a following wind you might get a little better than 20k but the fact it's an automatic tells against it . See if you can get some more opinions

Very hard this one. I looked at a S1 2+2 which was valued at 30k. As Chris says, this is an auto, webasto, project which hasn't been sprayed by someone who knows e types (as witnessed by the painting of catches, petrol tank mounts etc.
It has be worth the value of the parts which should be 15k ish.
It could cost around 5k to complete (probably more) so I have a horrible feeling you could lose money?
My advice would be to finish the car and enjoy it (as you probably originally intended?) and then sell it - at least you will have had some pleasure.
Whatever you decide to do, I wish you good luck.

Pity someone has cut a huge hole above the suspension. The 2+2 used front access panels, which your car has of course. It needs quite a bit of time/money to finish so I would definitely try to get it closer to running as a minimum. I bet every day you spend on it would add a couple of hundred quid. Whether you are able to do that, or interested in doing it, is another question. Good luck - my first E was a 66 Webasto 2+2, albeit manual.

I'm not sure that the cutout is a homemade job. There seems to be a randomness about the presence or absence of that cutout in the 1965-66 era with some cars having it and others not. I wonder whether it depends on what type of crossmember panel was available on a particular day when the body was being built. In any event I don't think it affects the value.

The 2+2 tub varies in a major way from the FHC tub in many places. Even apparently similar panels are unique to this model. The rear suspension tunnel is one of those areas and the 2+2 was ramping up production at this time. It is not really kosher to imagine they put flagship new model tubs together from whatever was lying around because they ran out of fundamental body structures. I've had three of these cars and inspected three more and never seen the cutout, only the front access panels.
I agree there is some variability in SWB cars but I haven't delved into it too deeply and suspect it can all be accounted for in bulletins. The variability in my experience consists of not finding a panel when one might have expected one, not finding a hole in cars that never had the hatch to begin with. All anecdotal, strictly-speaking, but no such part is shown in any 2+2 spares list.
As to value, I agree in broad terms but it doesn't look particularly evenly cut and unrepaired use of a large tin opener would put me off for starters. If it was a nice car and it was something I noticed on inspection it might not break the deal but I want at least a grand or two off for a hacked tub. If I saw two similar cars it would definitely swing me to the sound tub example. I may be unique in that, but since the question was about value and nobody mentioned the carve-up, I thought I'd better tell the enquirer before a prospective buyer does....

The cut out looks like it is part of the panel and not simply just cut in. The reason I say that is the recess that is around the whole cut out looks like it has been pressed into the sheet metal, doing that while it is in the car would be a highly skilled job requiring some special tools.
Maybe the panel has been replaced with one from another series?
If it is standard I have seen a cut out like that on a 4.2 OTS a friend of mine had, it was restored by XK engineering, it looked odd to me at the time because my car has bracings in not just a large open hole.

Dave : I agree with you - the pressed in hole is identical to that on my FHC in both its rhomboid shape and form . The bodge jobs that I have seen have all been rectangular cutouts . If that wasn't done in the factory, it was done with a good deal of skill

Mine is a 66 2 plus 2 and has a similar cut out. Same in fact.

That's the most likely explanation, I think. I suspect that SWB panels are much more common than LWB, certainly years ago before spares supplies were as good as today. Plenty of cars have been restored with odd panels, although admittedly the other areas rot before that panel does, so it does suggest it may have been there a long time.Dave K wrote:

The 2+2 has the same pressed pentagon shape as the other models, it just doesn't have a cut-out. Using the indentation as a guide it wouldn't take an artist to run a nibbler around the shape and make the hatch. However there's little point in doing it, unless he didn't see the front hatches under the trim? This also makes you wonder why someone would do it, unless they had only ever worked on SWB cars before and thought these tubs were the same?
What can I say? My 2+2s didn't have it, neither did the S2 OTS I just sold Angus earlier this year. I can't see my two 70 FHCs under the trim or from underneath but the 62 FHC has the hatch. Carsten will confirm I'm sure that his 66 doesn't have that cut-out. All 2+2 have the front hatches instead.
Nobody can show the hole (or a part number for the cover) in a 2+2 parts manual because it doesn't exist. The front holes do show up in the parts book and covers and screws have part numbers and the holes are there in this red car. The non-standard hole certainly looks neater than a hack job I've seen, so it's not all bad news, but unless/until someone shows me a 2+2 part number or Jaguar 2+2 spare part diagram, I have no option but to believe the factory over speculation.

I Would say- with a smile- that all parts which are not Body- colour or Aluminium are Satin black :-) But Other will Jump in and explain whats correct. A good Book on the Subject of originality is Thomas Haddocks Book, expensive, though. Or have a look at Porter/Andrew "Jaguar E". It has lots of fine pictures of every Model so this alone will help. And you can of course Look at xkedata.com....
