#1 Stub axle removal

Post by PaulColeman » Sat Jan 18, 2014 9:53 pm

Has anybody managed to get the stub axle out of the carrier? My 12 ton press was bending and the stub axle wasn't going anywhere!! I assume they're just pressed in there? I'm wondering if it's possible to get it all re-plated and mask off the bearing surfaces on the stub axle if I can't get them out?

Paul.

Not going to be much help but mine came out very easily. They are on a taper. You are pressing it that right way ?

Big press will do it eventually. Try tapping with a hammer while under load from the press.
Be careful, they let go with a big bang. I put a big cardboard box full of rags under mine.
Alternatively just plating the whole thing is fine. You can always fettle the bearing area with a bit of wet and dry if the bearing fit seems a little tight.

Paul : why do you want it out? If it is just to replate the upright, just tape off the stub axle. If it is worn, however, then you have no option, but a 30 ton press may well be needed , and do heed the warning about the stored energy which is released when they let go

Thanks for the replies...

Yes I only wanted it out to replate the upright. I'll ring the platers tomorrow and check if they can mask it off somehow and if they can I'll leave it as it's not worn by the looks of it.

Cheers, Paul.

Paul : I taped mine off when they were replated ( zinc-nickel in my case ) and there was no problem

+1 Paul; I taped the stub axles as the platers said that would be fine and it worked a treat.

I won't fly out if you leave the nut on! Just undo the nut a couple of turns until the stub axle breaks free then remove the nut. It's good practice anyway as it protects the threads.
