#1 Can Anyone Identify This Bumper Section

Post by malky1965 » Sun Feb 16, 2014 6:54 am

I saw this on the Bay but the owner is not quite sure what series it is off,
I need front ones for my S3 OTS to replace the Federal Rubbish but Im not sure if S2 ones will fit.

Thanks in advance

Malcolm

Hi,

I cannot be certain what the bumper shown is without measurement, but it does look like a Series II left bumper.

I can confirm that a Series II bumper does fit a Series 3 car, but you have to trim off the protruding bracket (at the centre of the car, adjacent to the grille when fitted). On the S2 cars, this bracket links the corner bumpers to the central bumper bar, which is not fitted on the S3. The cut off end is completely covered by the overrider and, if I recall correctly, is actually present on the S3 bumpers, which were made exactly as the S2 units then trimmed.

Given that, it seems unlikely the bumper shown is for a Series 1.5, because(and my knowledge of the earlier cars is sketchy at best), didn't the Series 1.5 have bumpers similar to the Series 1? The S1 and 1.5 (I thought) had the same bumpers. which had the sidelight/indicator units above the bumper (and therefore a slight depression in the bumper upper surface to allow this) and also didn't they both finish with a point at both ends, with the central point sort of flowing into the slim central finisher in the mouth of the grille? If that is all correct (try looking at images of S1.5 cars to confirm), then the bumper in the advert is an S2 unit and can easily be modified to S3 standard.

Regards,

Simon

Hi Simon, thanks for your reply. I had a look at S1.5 and S2 on google images and I see what you mean, it would appear to be a S2 like you suspected,
I shall make an offer !!!

Many Thanks for your informative reply
