aerial position??

Is there a correct position for the aerial... on my 67 2+2 the aerial was one of those swivel things on the roof.. I filled in the hole with the turret rebuild....WAZZA

Warren, my aerial was fitted to the drivers side bulkhead panel just in front of the door opening. Of course, whether this was an original or aftermarket fitment is unknown to me.

I'm not sure there is a "correct" location for the aerial, since radios were dealer-installed items, at least here in the U.S. My '65 had a hole drilled in the right-hand scuttle in addition to one in the right-rear quarter over the fuel pump. I've yet to see a car with a roof-mounted aerial on this side of the pond, but it seems to be popular in other countries.

There are holes in the bulkhead stiffener plates so yes, there is a specific factory location on each side for a fully-retractable antenna. Get it wrong and you run out of space below the skin after about 4 inches depth.

Later they switched to the right rear quarter on S3 and late S2 I think. Do an archive search on Jag-lovers or the relevant tech bulletins etc.

I would hazard a guess that the switch to the rear wing location was to allow for the fitment of electrically-retractable automatic antenna which became popular late '60s as I recall.

My '62 OTS came to me with such an antenna in the rear wing and I retained this but I'm pretty sure that is aftermarket. To be honest I use the radio so little (ie never) that if I were doing the rebuild over again I would fill in the hole and delete the antenna altogether.

One of the PO's of my car put a regular manual mast-type antenna inside the dash running horizontally through all of the stuff that's in there. It doesn't interfere with the wiper mechanism or the drop down panel or anything else inside there. It also doesn't have great reception (AM is rather poor), but I do have a functioning radio without any marring of the external surfaces. If the reception was too poor to use the radio, I would forget about it rather than add an external radio antenna to the beautiful body. Just my take on it.

The hole was in the right rear wing on my '64 FHC. I welded it shut and if I elect to install a radio will use a hockey puck style antenna (plug-in/removable) as used on the dash of the VW new Beetle convertible.

How does the antenna pick up any signal at all if surrounded by all the metal of the bulkhead?

However Winspeed in Guildford told me they fit aerials hidden under the dash but when I heard that I was bit sceptical.

Has anyone else got experience of 'hidden' aerials or antennas?

I have a powered mini antenna stuck to the windscreen and it works OK but not as effectively as a proper aerial. By powered I mean it requires a 12v supply for the electronic booster. I did try to hide it under the dash but it was useless if there is any steel between it and the radio transmitter. If you want a good and sensitive working radio you need a telescopic one for FM signals. Essential if you are using a period radio or one of those converted jobbies (which are completely useless!)

As I mentioned in my post, the reception isn't great, but on FM it does bring a signal that's worth listening to while driving. With an OTS, hood up or down, no radio sounds as good as one that you'd hear while sitting in a Rolls. With AM, the reception is poor, but most of the AM stations in my area aren't worth listening to, anyway. I still think that the most pleasing music is that generated by the resonators with the engine turning at about 3500 rpm!

Look at the April 1964 road test in Road & Track, where they tested a '64 FHC just like mine. The radio antenna mast is fitted on the right rear quarter on that car, and when my car was repainted I moved mine from the front to that location. The front scuttle-mounted antenna is really annoying to me (YMMV). I put in an automatic antenns from the period -- Hirschmann.
