#1 Gearbox/prop shaft oil seal replacement
Hi I'm sorry this is my first post on here but I really need some advise, I've been a car mechanic for 15 years but never had the pleasure of working on a e-type, my question is do you realy have to remove the engine and box to replace the gearbox oil seal where the prop shaft mounts up ?? I've been told you do ! There's me thinking classics are easy to work on !!

If it is a 3.8 with a Moss box then yes you need to drop the engine. If it is a 4.2 with the Jaguar box it can be done. You need to disconnect the prop shaft at both ends and you should then be able to slide it back (it is telescopic to an extent) and move it up/down/sideways to clear the diff. You may need to slacken off the IRS retaining bolts to give you more wriggle room. Getting the four slotted screws off can be a real pain as there is not much space. Best to replace them with Allen head versions when you put them back for your own and future owners sanity!
