#1 wire wheel tyre fitters around Surrey

Post by vikla » Mon Jun 23, 2014 11:26 am

I am thinking of changing my S1 painted wheels for a nearly new set of chrome ones which I have been offered at a price considerably below the typical new price (?1100+ for set of 4)

I want to keep my existing tyres which I am very happy with.
Therefore does anyone know of any tyre fitters around the Surrey and SW London area who would swap the tyres from one set of wheels to another and balance them.

I understand most tyre shops don't have the right cones for the balancing equipment, however these are readily available from FOSSEWAY PERFORMANCE for ?69 + vat. As a result I could buy some and just try a local company to me.

I guess plenty of people have been round this situation before....

Thanks
Steve

You need to be careful using a dynamic balancer. Longstone Tyres have one and spent a fortune having it modified to suit wire wheels. They no longer use it because the computer cannot cope with the fact that the hub may not necessarily be central to the rim yet still run true. They gave up and reverted to the traditional bubble balance which you can buy from Frost: http://www.frost.co.uk/static-wheel-balancer.html Bawtry may be a bit far to travel for you so you could try Vintage Tyres in Beaulieu or MWS in Slough.

Another option is

http://www.northhantstyres.com/index.html

Based in Aldershot 5 mins off the "Hoggs Back"

Bought some Mich. XVS's there 4 years ago and they were a little cheaper than MVS, Longstone and Vintage Tyres at the time. They are not insured to take wheels directly off cars but do have the facilities for wire wheel/tyre fitting and balancing if you take the wheels in.

I've used MWS in Slough before for the odd spoke replacement and have just taken all five of my original chrome wires in for checking plus new tubes, rim bands and Dunlop ER70VR15 SP Sports to replace the P4000s the car came with.
Friendly attentive service in my experience.
