I never sold an upgrade kit..... ever. I sold parts back in the 1990's to Glebe to make race boxes for TVR. They were not suppose to use these components to copy... but you know the rest. Anyway all of our extension housings have the Medatronics name on them cast above the mount.

You should dump that oil. The only reason I suspect they would run a thick oil is to mask noise....
Thanks,

Paul

I found a book that I've published there a little while ago for about ?100. Made me laugh as I've got a couple of thousand copies in my office. It comes with a companion volume at $25 the pair.

If you fancy a change of reading material I'll swap you a book on type 11 diabetes for Pauls book. They are both worth 3 figures and clearly blue chip investments.

#44 5 Speed gearboxes

Post by Robin S A Hall » Thu Feb 19, 2009 4:27 pm

Sometime has passed since November 2008 when there was chatter about 5 Speed boxes and the "new one" from ETF. I wonder if any one has had any experinces with the ETF box yet and are prepared to make comment?

What I have seen I have liked - to the extent that after sometime in discussion with Uryk I was eventually able to go to Darlington to try one in a demonstrator 3.8 with a 3.07 rear axle. I was impressed - it was quiet, pretty smoothe but a little tight in hitting 2nd from 3rd and a smallish movement between 2 to 3 which came out as fifth gear, on the odd occasion. Again going from 5 to 4 is a small movement which tried to go into 2nd. I suspect that this is just a matter of getting used to the box but if any one else has similar experinces please comment. Accoeding to Uryk the car had done about 1500 miles with the new box, hence the tightness. The ratios gears 1 to 4 were standard with a 0.72 in fifth which seem to give about 1800 revs for 70 mph. There was plenty of power still to come!

I am in the middle of a series 1 rebuild and will be needing a 5 speed box shortly, hence my interest in all your comments

I found Uryk to be helpful, knowlegible and a sound engineer. His frames are excellent and a perfect fit!

Good to hear your experiences. I suspect the speedo or tach (or both) are suspect on the test car, as they are on most E-Types, because it would translate to a speed of 185mph at 5,500 rpm. The ETF box actually has a 5th gear ratio of 0.82 IIRC so with 205/70 section tyres I would expect 1800 rpm to be 53.2mph, 2,500 rpm to be 74 mph which is about perfect. Dave Kerr tested the box so you might want to find out what he thinks.

Thanks David for your comments. I think you may be right about the correctness of the speedo/ rev counter!
As a new boy I am not quite familiar with this means of communication- so how do I make contact with Dave Kerr as I do not see his name in the memberlist?
Thanks
Robin

Dave Kerr sells some very nice stainless steel exhaust heat shields and you will find his contact details in the forum 'Restoration/Upgrades', 'Recommend Specialists' thread under 'Engine & Gearbox', 14th down in that list. Very friendly and knowledgeable bloke.

If i may, what makes anyone think that the "test driver" transmissions actually have the .82 OD or for that matter the heavy duty gears as advertised? Why do I say this? You ask? Because for the most part anyone can throw some pictures of gears on shafts on a website and embellish it with great text. However, if you really, really look at those pictures perhaps you would notice that ummm maybe that input shaft is a little too short to be used with a factory bell housing.... or the gearset pictured ( on a JT5 mainshaft) would not give you those ratios anyway...

Paul
Thanks,

Paul

Paul

Not sure if this should be in the public domain but those pictures on the ETF web site were illustrative for potential customers and deliberately misleading for potential competitors. They used bits from a 'competitors' box they were evaluating in the pictures. I have seen inside the ETF box, I was told where and how the parts were sourced but, for the time being, this information will remain confidential. The real pictures will appear on the ETF web site when they are ready to share. Uryk and the guys at ETF do seem to have a sense of fun.
