#1 Headlight scoops

Post by urpethdj » Tue Jul 29, 2014 8:35 pm

I wonder if anyone can help answer 3 questions I have re headlight scoops.

1. Are they easy to remove

2. Do you need to replace the seals

3. What colour should they be on a 1966 series 1 2+2 - mine look dull silver and I was going to respray chrome?

Thanks

1. Relatively - remove headlamp covers, headlamps, headlamp bowls and there are three sets of nuts holding them in place accessed from the wheel well. You can then remove the sugar scoop but they do require a bit of dexterous manoeuvring to get them out. Just a matter of patience.
2. There are no seals on the scoops, just rubber edging which should be OK. The headlamp glass cowls do have seals but they are unlikely to need replacement.
3. Hammertone silver - try Hammerite or Rustoleum rattle can paints

If you are going to do that consider the headlamp relay upgrade whilst everything is open. Simple to do a really effective: http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4919

Many thanks. That's really helpful.

I also liked the look of the headlight mod, but I think that is beyond my very limited practical skills.

I've never removed the headlights to remove the scoops.

Makes is so much easier if you do especially if you have never done it before. Besides I seem to recall you have the scoop retaining screws the wrong way around anyway! :D

I've just done this job during the removal of the front bumpers and didn't bother touching the headlights. The trick to getting the scoops out is to pull them clear of the bulkhead, swing the rear round anticlockwise and pull it out nose first turning it as you go.
Refitting is the reverse-in bum first, turning as you go and then shoogle the captive set screws through the holes in the bulkhead. At least I think that's how I did it. I remember thinking that I should really right it down for the next time.

There are two slots that allow the scoop to come out of the aperture as well.
