I'm looking to sell the 4 Synchro gearbox out of my S2 2+2. I know that to fit this into an OTS or FHC, the rear extension housing would need to be changed. I'd like to know about other potential conversions though, will a Moss box bellhousing fit on my box? likewise, what about a Moss box rear extension?

Your box will fit a Series XJ or S-type and I believe a MkX/420G.
A late Moss bell might fit as some of them were machined for the larger synchro front bearing, otherwise no. No, Moss bits won't fit the back of a 4-synchro.

Hi Ian,
I think you will find that the main shaft is much longer than an OTS / FHC box and runs the length of the tail extension irrespective of the rear oil pump housing. This then Become a very big job in my opinion.
If you where very keen and had the rear housing bits I imagine you could get the long shaft machined and retreated to the shorter version spec.
However, being a series 2 box, I think the ratios are not that desirable anyway.
But, I think I read here that Angus Moss fits the early EJ ratios to the later KE box and all is good. Depends how desperate you are I guess.
I had similar considerations a long time ago as I have a very good V12 box, KL serial No, which is the same as the series 2 long wheel base box, I think, apart from the bell housing bits.

Can the 2+2 gearbox be adapted to fit an OTS or FHC i.e. by taking the rear 'extension' off? If so, how difficult is it?

Yes Malc it can be adapted - but you need the SWB rear housing (not available although I think Barratts did try and make some once) and the mainshaft , - this is available for about ?400 from Barratts or Robey .
good luck.

As stated, it 'can' be done, same adding/removing an overdrive. In practice though, you'd need to source a donor gearbox to supply the bits so mostly it make more sense to sell what you have and refurb the donor. A Jag gearbox specialist mght have dead boxes to cannibalise but apart from that just do the sums once you've found a parts source and choose your best optionMalc wrote:Can the 2+2 gearbox be adapted to fit an OTS or FHC i.e. by taking the rear 'extension' off? The reason I asked is that I have a 2+2 box which I am just about to sell as I have put an overdrive box from a 1968 420 in my car, so wanted to advise any potential purchasers that it could, or could not, be adapted to fit an OTS or FHC.
I also note from your previous post Pete, that it would also fit an XJ, an S-type or a Mk10/420.
