#1 Changing Automatic Gearbox

Post by M4rk » Mon Oct 13, 2014 11:08 am

Hi,

I am looking to venture into E type ownership, It's likely my best option is a Series 2 2+2, I have noticed a couple for sale with auto gearbox is it possible to change this to a manual box and are there any differences in the engine between auto and manual?

Thanks

Mark

There's an XJ6 manual Overdrive gearbox on eBay now, complete with bellhousing & gearstick, that would be a good start. It's item number 121454498497, I've just realised it comes with the engine too, not bad for ?1.3k

Really hard to convert as the transmission tunnel is different.

Is the S2 2+2 tunnel different to the 1.5 2+2 then Angus? Skiday on here did this 4 years ago succesfully on his 1.5.

No, the tunnel for an auto is different to a manual Ian,

I realise that Angus but this is what the other member I mentioned had done, auto to manual in a S1.5 2+2.

Thanks Steve, I hadn't read this entire thread but I did find Skiday's photo's online today, it looks like there's a significant amount of effort involved but ultimately the job can be done.

Angus is right but wrong.

The auto tunnel IS different, but that makes it easier, if anything, to fit a manual overdrive box in because there's more room. Sometimes the back of the manual tunnel needs slight relieving to clear the top two studs on the overdrive, or the solenoid at the side.

Auto to MOD converters can also choose between the cheaper XJ overdrive box with its rear-set lever (coming out roughly where the auto selector is) or the rarer/dearer S-type / MkX short top MOD. This brings the lever out where the standard lever emerges and works if they also pay for a manual console to match.

As early as 1961 Jaguar were experimenting with adapted tunnel pressings to allow the then-new 'Zenith' (aka MkX) Compact Type-A overdrive to be fitted as an alternative to a normal auto or manual. They decided against it but made the change for the 2+2 starting in 1966.
